Where I fish, they are called dolphin. The only time you hear mahi is when someone who catches them is trying to explain to a non-fisherperson that no, they did not catch Flipper...or at restaurants and grocery stores.

I know a fishing forum in SC where you can often see the fish called "phins".

They are in fact in different families.

But not as good as sea turtle.

This thread is great. Just today I was talking about dolphin fishing and got that same old confused and surprised look of someone who thought I was reeling in flipper. I explained it to him (while a friend who lives in Hawaii sitting beside me knew what dolphin was and explained the mahi thing.) Then while searching for something totally different this thread pops up...coincidence so I had to click on it.

I call them dolphin more often than not. The other times, I call them mahi. In my circles, the names are interchangeable and no one even address it.

I don't like eating spit and pubes.

For any that have fished with me its really a non issue anyway because the fish I generally get into are referred to as Chickens by most.
From reading some of your other posts, I think you might be contradicting yourself.

You might get upset in the NC, VA or MD too as you won't see Striped Bass on the menu.
