Default Thank you cards from higher-end retailers?

In the last week or two, the admiral and I have gotten 3 "thank you" cards from "luxury" retailers - side effect of xmas gifts etc. Nothing too crazy, probably the result of a $300-800 purchase.

Now, I get it, customer retention and prospecting and all that. But the cards have been handwritten and flat out embarrassing.

One of them said "Happy New Year!" .. that one arrived Feb 1.

Another arrived today and said "thank you for your purchase, Mr Flo t ... we appr eciate your purchase" scrawled diagonally across a piece of cardstock stuffed in an envelope. (this was for a gift I hadn't given yet, luckily I got to it before the admiral did)

Both had abysmal handwriting and frankly were an embarrassment to their vendors.

Just curious if anyone actually appreciates this sort of thing? Was it just coincidence that these all showed up at once or did everyone's sales dry up completely in Jan or something?

Those are mass created by sweat shops in China and mailed to everyone who spent more than 5 bucks, nothing special about it, they just want more money.

My wife bought a car March 24 2007. The salesperson CALLS every year to wish my wife a birthday, even though we moved 1300 miles away from the dealership. Every year she says thank you, but you can stop calling and every year she gets the call

I write a thank you card to every new client I get. Been doing so for almost 20 years. Personalized Cranes paper, the works. The referrals keep coming

Just roll with it! Gifts are part of business. Say Thank You and move on!

I get them from the jeweler predominately. The Benz dealer sends flowers every year (Freakin want to kill him).

This.

I think it is better than nothing. Even though I would probably take it out of the mailbox, open it, look at it, kind of grin, and toss it in the trash.
But I would remember them, which is their tactic.

I understand that these "mass" cards are annoying but would you feel the same if say, the owner of the business handwrote and sent the thank you letter?

Are you knocking all thank you cards from businesses or just mass cards?

Sales is such a hard position.
