Default A trip to Bass Pro.

Sunday before the game I decided to spend some quality time with my best bud Curtis and take a ride to Bass pro shops in Foxboro. For those that don't know, Curtis is my 9 yo APBT/boxer mix. We used to go all the time but lately with my crazy winter work schedule and having 3 dogs now, one on one time with any of them can be hard.

Anyway we get to bass pro around 11am and after taking care of peeing on every lamp post in the parking lot we head in and walk around. It was pretty dead until around noon.

By 1230 or so the people started pilling in, and a lot of them also had their dogs with them, everything from lab puppies to Great Danes. Curtis and I did our usual thing, walk around, meet people say hi to kids, and everyone in general was pretty friendly.

I decided it was time for some pics so we went downstairs to the trout pond and got a pic of Curtis with the moose and then a pic in front of the fish tank for some pics with the stripers. After the pics we sat on the bench in front of the fish tank for some people watching and watch all the kids point at all the fish.
I like this spot because it is a good spot for socializing a dog, lots of pleasant sounds, smells and people.. It is a positive experience and friendly location..

While I sat there with Curtis laying beside me on the bench with his head on my lap. Several folks came over with their kids and asked if they could pet Curtis and asked what kind of dog he was, how old he was, and commented on his color.. I always tell the truth as to the breed of my dogs when someone asks. It is better for everyone concerned to know..

Some people still avoided us all together.

Then out of nowhere it happened. The sound no one wants to hear when kids and dogs are together. That awful aggressive growl and bark.. That sound has to be one of the worst ever.

10 min later it happened again.

Again 2 min later.

A few mins after the 3rd time a woman walked by Curtis and I sitting on the bench and said why would you bring a dog like that into a public place with all these children around.
Before I could answer, it happened again. That awful aggressive growl and bark. This time it was 20' behind and to the left of where we were sitting.

After looking in the direction it came from and seeing it was a gentleman with 2 GSD's a male and a female I turned back to the woman that made the comment and asked "a dog like what?" The she looked down at Curtis who was still laying down with his head in my lap, rolled her eyes and just walked away without another comment..

A very nice elderly lady who was standing next to the bench waiting for her grandchildren watching the fish tapped me on the shoulder and said to me. "Sir you have a very well behaved dog. It does not matter what kind of dog he is, he is beautiful".. I quietly thanked her for her compliment, told her his name and that he was my best bud in the world.

Curtis and I have been to BPS dozens of times in the 7 odd years I have had him. Every time we go is a learning experience for one of us, It started as training and socialization for him and while he is always very good a little extra socializing as he ages never hurts.

This time I hope someone else got to learn a little something.

My bud with the moose and the fish.

Happens all the time. Someone will come up to me walking Knox, they comment on how handsome he is, and ask what breed. When I say APBT, about 3/4 are astonished and back away giving me a dirty look.

What's a APBT. I wonder how long it will be before someone is attacked or their pet is attacked and Bass Pro is sued.

You didn't make your dog get up off the bench so the old lady could sit down?

Cool story. Big dogs in public will make many do a double take.

I came around the corner in lowes and there were three giant dobies laying in the aisle. I straight up asked if the guy was LE because they were so well behaved. He said (like you said) that its a great learning experience for the dogs to be in a public setting like that. Working dogs expel a ton of energy being and staying on high alert for commands, which they need to be at all times in a crowded environment like a box store.

Good looking pup by the way.

If I am not mistaken it is left up to the location if they choose to allow dogs in the store..

The Foxboro store has always allowed dogs. In fact when you walk in the greeter at the door hands you a plastic Poop bag and a treat for your dog. All dogs must be leashed and remain with their owners and in their control at all times. Disruptive dogs have been requested to leave from time to time..

I'm going to bring mine to BPS this week and see if they let me in. Worst case I'll wear sunglasses.

They welcome her to Home Depot with open arms but I've never tried BPS

Edit: I called...no go at the one in Fort Lauderdale because they have an attached restaurant

Foxboro has a restaurant too, and I bring Bella frequently... we live right down the road. She loves it there and she gets lots of attention from kids (Golden Retriever).

HyperPet K9 Cannon... best invention EVER.

I didn't know they allowed dogs - Brillo the Wonder Dog will have to go visit. He goes to Home Depot, and some other local places all the time. Great way to socialize the dog, and just more fun to run errands with him along.

Just go ahead and get your official Service, Emotional Support or Therapy Dog kit and go in anywhere...

https://www.servicedogkits.com/emotional-support-dog/

$129 and make up a good story if asked. Rehearse... they recommend it.

Heck... I might get one for my dog, Charlie. Just for dress up day. He needs constant emotional support...

Why do you feel the need to take your dog shopping at the mall?
