Default Kids and Death

A family member is putting their dog down today. My 3 year old sees the dog often. What do we tell him? The whole, dog went to a farm thing?

Just be honest. Animals (and people) die.

The simpler the answers, the better for a 3 year old. Tell him the dog got very old and it died. There may be more questions, keep it simple and reassure the child.

Just went through this with my 5 year old. My folks had to put down their dog just before Christmas. We just told her the truth. She asked if she would ever see Nika (the dog) again and we said no. We told her that her Nanny was very sad, and that we were very sad, and that was that. Couple days later she said, out of no where, that she misses Nika.

Yep. Tell it like it is without being harsh. Part of life. My 5yo handles it better than I do.

I live by three simple creeds!

1. You reap what you sow
2. Try never to cast stones, most are boomerangs
3. Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy

With that said, try to make the child understand that dog years are not like people years.

There have been several significant deaths in our family when our kids were younger, people (grandma)and pets.
. We were just honest, and gently as possible, to the point.
As someone mentioned, they seem to handle it better than we do .
I think telling them as it is prepares them for the reality of life.We all must go sooner or later.

But dang if they arent some good ones! and the short amount of time they are here, they bring some tremendous JOY to the people they are close too (or should that be the other way around?).

Be honest. It is a lot easier and less traumatic to introduce a child to the death of an animal, than trying to do it if a family member dies.

Doggy heaven, where he can chase frisbees all day. It's a better place. It's what my parents told me about my grandparents dog. Be slightly upbeat about it, a 3 year old will pick up on that.

One of the few things I hope is not true in the bible.
Animals do not have souls, therefore no heaven!

The pope actually consoled a young boy, who's dog had just died, by telling him that it is in heaven.
