Default Engagement Ring Help

New to shopping so need advice (never thought I would ask about this on a boating forum). I found a ring I think she will like. It is 1.16 caret princess cut in a platinum setting. I am being told E color and VS1 clarity. Problem is there is not a certificate. He showed me other certified diamonds and it appears to be on par with the certified ones. Any thoughts?

get it appraised before your stroke the check. I know there are a few jewelry guys on here that can give better advice. Here are my first thoughts of what could go wrong.

- it's worse quality that stated
- it's not even a real diamond
- it's stolen and has a serial number etched into it that has been reported stolen

I am sure there are other possible scenarios.

If you haven't already go spend some time reading on pricescope dot com

It's the THT for diamonds

Went through this last year (1st anniversary is Sun)

Get educated there is a LOT of markup in jewelry (like mind blowing amount).

I think finding an honest jeweler is VERY difficult. Even the crooks have loyal customers.

Just order one from Freedbaby, he makes some nice bling.

trust me on this. this is a ring your soon to be wife will be looking at hopefully forever, LET HER PICK IT OUT. that way she gets exactly what she wants and will be happy to show it off without telling her friends it's nice but. after all you don't pick out her clothes do you, so why would you leave such an lasting decision to what you think "she may like". My wife picks out all her jewelry and loves every piece and I get all the credit. good luck.

Unless you know what she likes, I agree have her pick it out.

One of my close friends is a high end jeweler, so for me it was easy.

If you are not buying from someone you know and trust, make sure it is certified, etc.

I don't know what the one I bought is, we knew what she liked, and I don't plan on selling it.

Personally I'd rather get a higher quality diamond even if it means smaller.

Great you posted just in time.....You still have time to back out, don't do it run for the hills.

If you don't listen you'll be looking up this thread in 10 years and thanking me for the advice you didn't take.

X2.

My GF just sold a really nice 2.02 princess cut. GIA certified VS1 G. I can tell you what we got for it if you want to PM me.

Before selling it, I got good advice from FreedBaby on what the market was for it.

I am happy to help. If you need any ideas or thoughts you can call me or email me anytime.

But to be clear, you should assume 100% that if there is no GIA certificate (not any other three letters, just G. I. A.) it is NOT what it is represented to be. There is a reason they didn't provide you with a certificate.

Listen to him. Besides if your non certified diamond isn't what you were led to believe and she gets it appraised (she will tell you she did it for insurance purposes) and it doesn't pass muster you are screwed. If she goes with you to pick it out you will be the hero. Nothing less and that will be the last you ever hear about it.

Buy her a nice diamond ring. But make sure in the pre-nup she doesn't get you boat or your homes or 1/2 your income.

Btw, this thread is useless without pictures, if you know what I mean

See if there is a family heirloom ring you can use......put a new stone in it. It worked for me and I didn't even need to replace the stones.

I should add...my wife, girlfriend at the time, knew every dollar I (we) spent on a diamond would be dollar for dollar with what we didn't have in our bank account.

I went to bluenile but it was a long time ago. Can't say what they're like now. Chose the stone first and then the setting. Came with a certificate of the stone and the value for insurance.

Get a CZ at Sears pocket the difference. No Hymen no Diamond! No cherry don't marry.

That's my new catch phrase.

X3. Get in touch with Freedbaby, you'll be glad you did. Last Christmas I upgraded my wife's engagement ring. I checked all over central Florida and Jay got me a much nicer diamond for a very favorable price. Better than anything I could find. The ring is beautiful. And my wife gets compliments all of the time.

Congrats on the upcoming nuptials!
