Whoa...

That was one hell of a read.

Amazing story. I lived near Caribou Maine for two winters...or that is all I remember of the two years we were up there.

To survive all of that living in a tent? No way...

Got through most of it so far.
It is an amazing story.
Talk about culture shock on his reintroduction to today's world.

I stayed 1 night in the 20s in modern camping gear in the Smokies during a 2 week Appalachian trail section hike. I got a ride into town to sleep in a hotel the next night that was going to be colder. A few decades in Maine? I'm out...

Wkipedia

Christopher Thomas Knight (born 7 December 1965), also known as the North Pond Hermit, was a hermit who lived almost without human contact for 27 years in the woods in Maine. He survived by committing about 1,000 burglaries against houses in the area, or about 40 per year. Apart from the fear and notoriety his many burglaries created in the local area, Knight's unusual life also attracted widespread international media reports upon his capture.

Knight entered the woods in 1986 without saying goodbye to anyone, aged 20, and was captured during a burglary in 2013. His only human contact in that time was exchanging a trivial greeting to a hiker once.
Knight's parents apparently never reported him missing to the police. In an interview, Knight described his parents as, "I had good parents", and, "We're not emotionally bleeding all over each other. We're not touchy-feely. Stoicism is expected." The family's next-door neighbor for 14 years hasn't exchanged more than a few words with Knight's mom.

Many have expressed admiration for Knight's outdoor survival skills, especially in the harsh Maine winters.
Knight was sentenced to 7 months in jail on 28 October 2013, of which he had already served all but a week while awaiting sentencing. Knight has described deep-felt ethical misgivings about the burglaries committed, saying that stealing is wrong. Even the prosecutor said that a longer sentence would have been cruel. After release, Knight also has to meet with the judge every week, avoid alcohol, and attend a job or an education.

Photos of his camp...

Yeah I'll bet there are none of "those types" in Virginia though.

Great read.

I agree......

I was part of the “Chosen Frozen” at Loring AFB Maine for close to 3 years in the 80’s after the Bomb Wing at Seymour/Jonson NC lost its B-52G Squadron in preparation for the arrival of KC-10’s. I still get cold when I think about that place in the middle of the summer.
