Default Double Bucks for SNAP - Fresh Produce

The federal government is about to put $100 million behind a simple idea: doubling the value of SNAP benefits — what used to be called food stamps — when people use them to buy local fruits and vegetables.

This idea did not start on Capitol Hill. It began as a local innovation at a few farmers' markets. But it proved remarkably popular and spread across the country.

"It's so simple, but it has such profound effects both for SNAP recipients and for local farmers," says Mike Appell, a vegetable farmer who sells his produce at a market in Tulsa, Okla.

The idea first surfaced in 2005 among workers at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. They were starting a campaign to get people to eat more fresh produce.

"I think we were trying to confront the idea that healthy foods, [like] fresh fruits and vegetables, are not affordable," says Candace Young, who was director of the department's nutrition programming at the time. (Young now works for The Food Trust in Philadelphia.)

Young recalls that one of their workers pointed out that some SNAP recipients live near farmers markets "and we thought, how about we incentivize them to use their SNAP benefits at these farmers markets?"

Haha. I have been saying this for years. Either in high-stamp areas to have farmers markets that stamps have extra value, or for produce to have double value in stores.

Awe hell with it - give them all the fruits and veggies they want for free. Heck, let's even give them a buck or two rebate for every 6 ounces of fruit they eat.

How about this, go to work, real work, and be healthy by getting off yer dead ass and doing something strenuous?

This is exactly what makes this country great! People getting as much as possible for doing nothing!
Only thing keeping me from getting angry about it is knowing how appreciative and greatful these people are for their handouts.

Has anyone looked at the price of produce lately? At half off I know I'd be inclined to buy a lot more than is affordable now...

Wow, I want a snap card.

I'm going to call it my stone crab card and only buy stone crab with it. Jumbo select ones at that.

Maybe some warm water lobster tails

Well, when those farmers start selling Weaves, Gucci Knock offs and doing nail extensions, then they may be able to make a go of it.

Do you have any idea how many military families are getting SNAP? Not everyone who is on assistance is Ronald Raygunz welfare queen with 10 kids by 10 daddies and no job! Most of the poor are working harder than anyone else! Opportunity ain't what it used to be. Try to be grateful for what you have without hating others.

If most of the people who are on this site got paid $9 an hour for every hour they worked I would be willing to bet a lot would not be eligible for Food stamps. There are some very hard working poor people. I would be willing to bet there are a lot more very hard working people not eligible for food stamps.

Why not just limit SNAP bennies to fresh fruits, veggies and meats? No extra "double."

Another issue is when those SNAP cards are used...there is a processing fee. Guess who gets to skim that?

I stop by the local seafood place every Friday for a dozen blue crab (bait).

The people I see in there typically pay with their "card".

They cant afford fruit and veggies, but have no problem stocking up on $50-$100 worth of seafood?

It has nothing to do with availability or price and everything to do with what they want. If they dont want veggies, they wont buy them even if they are free.

Just another example of the govt. control.

I would have no issue with that, although it might be seen as an infringement of their rights, thus why they went for basically a 'rewards' system for veggies/fruit.

Ever owned a farm?

I think we should give them canned foods and protein. They can go pick up their rations at the local distribution point once a week.

What a simple solution, and I bet you don't even know anyone with SNAP! I'll tell my 88 year old mother-in-law what you suggest, maybe she can find a job in between medical appointments, or at least on those days when she has nothing to do for the eight hours she's able to stay vertical. I'll start with something snide like "rhuematoid arthritis be damned, get out there and earn what you eat!"
