I was paying attention to that also. Just take a look at some of those splashes... keep in mind they are miles away.

What was that freighter doing so close to the island? Does Papua Nugini have a port?

Yep lots of them. All over the place. Port Moresby is the capital. It is also one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Not a bad claim for a town of only 350000 folks. Raskal gangs rape you before they eat you.

Thats in Rabaul. It used to be the most magical place. Before it blew up, then blew up again and again (Rabaul harbour itself is a super volcano and if it goes bang goodbye life on earth). There are some nice places on the north coast of New Britain.

New Ireland off the north coast is well worth visiting. If you want to see unspoilt paradise and friendly people and great surfing. http://www.newirelandtourism.org.pg/

there are some great world war treks on all islands.

Boaguanville Island is also open for business after 20 odd years of unrest.

Raja Ampat in Indonesian West Papua is another must see destination.

Wow! I gathered from TV and movies that P N was completely isolated, almost uninhabitable and the only natives were Pygmies and huge turtles.

Yas and no. Any one who landed there was eaten. So it developed a no go reputation. Add to that the tropical disease.

Highlanders (pygmies) are smart as hell. Though because of a lack of protein in their diet they would eat you. Islanders are a bit more chilled out. Massive turtles, yep, pretty common. Other mad stuff are shark callers, crocodile people, cargo cults. Fuzzi Wuzzi Angels, glaciers in the tropics. Strong weed 2. Its a mad spot. Failed state. But if you are adventurous visit.

Cargo Cults???

At my current sexy level of 280 lbs I would be a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese to the Highlanders so if I ever do go there I'll make sure to stay on the beaten path.
Sounds like a very interesting place. Thanks for the insight.

Over 800 languages from 60 unrelated language groups New Guinea (including Indonesian West Papua). The terrain is inhospitable. Unfortunately it is loosing its forrest due to asian logging companies and corruption. West Papua was basically given to Indonesia for anti communist support and our PM Whitlam was into making friends not fighting wars and not into pissing off Yanks. Such a shame. Free West Papua movement is almost dead over here less we piss off Indo. We took back East Timor and freed the people while keeping the oil and gas. Most of the tuna in the world come from PNG and Solomon Island seas. Yellowfin and Big Eye are in real problem here. Overfishing sucks. USA is heavily involved FYI.
