Default 24 Hours of Le Mans

Looks like Audi is on the ropes this year. Toyota snagged pole with Porsche 2nd.
2 Ferrari's will lead the GTE classes

Of course, it's 24 hours and anything can and will happen.

Had some good times there. We used to camp out on the turn of the downhill side of the "tire" bridge.

Great party. We even saw some racing at times.

I wouldn't count out the Germans. Long race, bad weather can occur and dumb driving are big time factors. The machines are mostly bullet proof but the last few hours will determine who has the best overall team.

Toyota has been very strong in the warm up races. Of course, the Porsches are new, but they have been under development for a while and they did run the fastest lap at the last race at Spa. It will be interesting to see how their decision to go with the very compact V4 and the full F1 style ERS works out. What I am wondering is why Porsche has only made 4 of the newest 991 based RSR available to teams, the Manthey factory pro team with two and the Patrick Dempsey and the Proton am teams with one each? The other four Porsche GT's in he race are the old 997 based car. In contrast, there are 14 Ferraris in the field. It is a bit weird to think about a Ferrari being the "affordable customer car' in this game. It wold be interesting to see what would happen if Ferrari decided to provide that engine to LMP 2 teams. Right now, your choice is Nissan, Nissan , Nissan and maybe Judd/BMW. I get the impression that Honda is still kind of a semi-factory deal and may continue to be for a while with the new engine that is supposed to be coming out.

But fast means a lot if you can finish. A number of years ago, I read that by the time they got the bugs worked out by the second year, the Porsche 917 was pretty much the first car to ever race at LeMans where you could run the entire 24 hours with the loud pedal all the way to the floor and not have to worry about the engine blowing up. The frame on it and its replacement, the 936, was more delicate that the drivetrain. Of course, they solved all of those problems with the 956-962 line. That is the same kind of reliability that Audi has had in recent years. The cars were also very easy to repair quickly in the beginning. When they first started running the R8 V8 turbo cars, they could they could swap out the entire rear end including engine, tranny, suspension etc, in 30 minutes, Needless to say the ACO outlawed such things eventually.

Audi......sandbagging as usual. The E-trons are almost robotic in their consistency.

The old adage in racing:

"To finish first, you must first FINISH"

An hour to go and Corvette Racing has 1 car fighting for the win, so I guess I will watch the last hour on TV this morning.
I am pretty bored with the whole diesel hybrid LMP class, although I'd like to see Toyota win (not going to happen being 6 laps down).

Was this on fox sports 1 again? Since Comcrap got rid of speed channel I cant watch this series. 800 channels I dont need, and no FS1. Worst all around company HANDS DOWN.

The Audis are the only diesels left. A few years back Peugeot ran diesel cars in LMP 1. The Toyota has a normally aspirated 3.4 liter V8 and the Porsche has a 2 liter turbo V4. I think that the Rebellion Racing privateer LMP1 cars are running the Toyota V8 engine without the hybrid setup. Most of the LMP 2 cars are running the old reliable Nissan engine. I suspect that and of the new F1 engines could be modified to run in the LMP1 hybrid factory team class.

None of the cable providers got rid of Speed. I read on one of the racing websites that Fox bought it and turned it into Fox Sports 1. they are apparently trying to compete with ESPN.
