When do you trade cars?

I have 2011 jetta diesel that I use as a commuter. Bought new, closing on 100k miles....getting the itch, but running better then the day I brought it home. Always buy thinking 200k on this one, just can't get there.

jmiska 06-12-2014 06:25 PM

200k on a modern, well maintained vehicle is quite reasonable, I think. I tend to drive a lot, and keep my cars/trucks for a long time. My daily driver Tahoe has over 360K, and our Suburban has 180. Both drive like new.

TheRealMacGyver 06-12-2014 06:28 PM

I think with the money we spend for new cars/trucks you got to get 150-200 before even considering it. Now if you are buying used, maybe you could change more often. My wife is driving a 2006 Toyota with about 160,000 and I am driving a 2008 Dodge with about 80,000. Bought both new and both paid off. Now is the time to get the return on the investment.

I shoot for 60-75k. I like driving a new vehicle. I also put ~30,000 a year on the odometer so it works out to approx. every 2 years.

All that being said my current truck has 160k on the clock and it's the longest I've ever kept a vehicle. It's getting traded as soon as I make up my mind on a new one though.

I love seeing people with well maintained older vehicles, but it just doesn't work for me.

Searosis 06-12-2014 06:41 PM

Too often!

dssmith 06-12-2014 07:44 PM

About every 7-10 years.

porksoda 06-12-2014 07:50 PM

When the engine goes. Usually 250k to 300k miles. I drive them hard and do around 40k per year.

Welshtrustee 06-12-2014 07:56 PM

For me, about 8-10 years unless something I have to have is invented. Just sold my 04 suburban with 173k miles. Bought a tahoe that I plan to keep for at least 8'years. I'm 39 and have only owned 5 vehicles, including the tahoe I just got 2 months ago.

GWcpa 06-12-2014 08:05 PM

Every 12-18 months. Don't trade. Private sell then buy. Turned 10k today and looking.

bamaboy473 06-12-2014 08:28 PM

Welshtrustee has to be my alter-ego  Our family consisting of two sons and the two of us have plowed through at least 150 vehicles that have 4 wheels...not counting boats/planes/motorcycles.

There's no time frame or miles thing to trading; it's just what we do.

Hey, I'm the world's lousiest car buyer, having three Land Rovers in one year :rofl:

Now we have a Toy and and a Lexus, and life is good again

Until I get tired of them.
Toys; Long time... My Carrera is finally for sale after great 16 years, Been on www.hotrodhotline.com for the last hour looking for the next toy

Main ride; Tahoes since 97, Caddy Sevilles before them. Until I feel like it's time, usually a year or two into a body style change, and usually 150k or so.

lobstercatcher 06-13-2014 03:34 AM

I seem to get ride of my daily driver every 3 years. I have a couple things at 10 years and one 30 years.

LI32 06-13-2014 03:45 AM

Daily drivers are every 3 years - usually 30-45,000 miles; weekend cars are when I get the urge - usually 4-6 years and 10-12,000 miles.

I buy your used daily drivers... And keep them till 200k or so. The car will let me know when it's time... May still be running, and but needs constant attention - time to go.

catfever24 06-13-2014 04:18 AM

We have 2 Toyota trucks and still plan to keep them for awhile. My wife drives a 98 Tacoma 4wd and I drive an `03 Tundra Limited 4wd. Wifes truck is running around 120k miles and my truck is running around 159k miles. She keeps saying she needs a new truck but just won`t go to a dealer to make it happen. She been saying this for 2 yrs now. I`m probably going to hang on to my Toyota till at least 200k before I sell it. It runs great and I keep it in great shape so why get rid of it.

HarleyFLHP 06-13-2014 04:28 AM

I am in search of the perfect vehicle, but have never found it. I flip vehicles all too often. My wife gets a new vehicle every 6 yrs.

Searosis 06-13-2014 05:13 AM

I bought myself a 2013 Lexus and jut got a company car so I gave it to the wife. I think its gonna be the first long term keeper. I am 29 and have had 9 cars in the last 12 years that I have been driving... Jesus... This just put it into perspective!

Fl Fisherman 06-13-2014 05:18 AM

When the tires are wore out.

Hagar TH 06-13-2014 05:21 AM

I trade trucks when my accountant tells me I have to spend some money on the company. Usually about every 2 years. I have a Jeep which I shall probably keep forever and a 93 Nissan Pathfinder with 312,000 miles on it. Wife gets a company car every two years.

36month lease. Mfg warranty covers everything during the lease. When lease is over, get another vehicle. No hassle with trading in or selling old vehicle. No ownership of a rapidly depreciating asset
