Why do stores still take checks

WTF, I dont get it. Sure back in day when you couldnt do debit cards, But if you are buying stuff at walmart or a grocery store get with it. I cant stand waiting behind someone that writes a check for groceries. Get a damn check card, dont hold up the line. And dont wait until you see the total to start the process of trying to locate you check book and find your damn drivers license.

Why do places like walmart or grocery stores even take checks ;? Seems really outdated.

for small business or paying for a service etc than its fine

CJS 06-11-2014 07:45 AM

Old school....Because I can.

phillyg 06-11-2014 07:49 AM

What's a check?

houtxfisher 06-11-2014 07:50 AM

Pfft, these idiots writing checks really grind my gears! When I get up there its a quick swipe of my food stamp card and I'm done. You'd think these suckers paying for their groceries out of pocket would at least do so without holding up the line!

Eastport205 06-11-2014 07:50 AM

Dude, your in a Walmart.

Ever wait in the checkout line with 3 or 4 other folks, staring endlessly at the gum and magazines? Finally it's the woman's turn in front of you. She waits until the checkout person says, "Your total is $XX.XX". Then the purse comes off the shoulder and is placed on the counter. The purse is unsnapped or unzipped and her fingers walk through the compartments until she finds her wallet. She fiddles with the wallet until she finds an envelope and pulls out some bills to count. The bills go back into the envelope which then goes back into the wallet. Then the wallet is turned over and the change purse is unsnapped. She rustles around in the change purse for a spell picking out coins, then opens the purse wide and sticks her hand in to dig around in the bottom. She slowly counts out the money and hands it to the cashier. Finally, the woman is presented with change and a receipt. The wallet is opened again to retrieve the envelope for the bills which are placed carefully in it, then the envelope finds it's home in the proper compartment of the purse. The change in coins waits for the coin section to be found and unsnapped and they are then deposited. The wallet is then put back in the purse. Now for the receipt, which of course must go in an envelope which must be retrieved from a different section of the purse. The purse is then purposefully zipped or snapped and finally it goes back over the shoulder.

Why are these women so seemingly surprised when they're expected to pay?

Now mind you, this is an observation, not a complaint. I'm retired and absolutely refuse to be in a hurry ... these women just tickle me.

Small mom and pop stores here take cash and checks, no credit cards.

Eastport205 06-11-2014 08:11 AM

Maybe they shopped in Target with a debit card and they figure it is easier to inconvenience you than it is themselves changing over all the things attached to the old card that had to be cancelled.

At the highest level I think the stores just want revenue and the tender type is secondary. Travelers Checks are a bit of an anachronism too but they don't cost the store much to processes relative to debit and credit cards.

ol guide 06-11-2014 08:12 AM

what about the miscreant fu*&tard silverback who dominates the line at a convenience store scratching off lottery tickets while you stand there with a century note in cash for fuel?

jeffro22 06-11-2014 08:14 AM

something tells me that a few of you that have posted are clueless check writers that are stuck in the past:grin::grin:

Liek I said, I understand smaller stores or business.

I'm nearing 30 and have never used checks as a primary form of payment. I've probably written less than 100 in my life. So for me it's never been the standard.

It seems like it's always some older lady/gentleman who's holding up the line at Wal-Mart (or even worse, the gas station) with a check. I understand resistance to change, but I don't get it in this instance. It's clearly the same thing just way more convenient. To me, it's like going out and buying a new computer then paying extra to have a 56k dial up modem installed because that's what you started out with; and you've been used to it for so many years. So what's the deal? Do they not trust cards?

hhi angler 06-11-2014 08:18 AM

Checks are still legal paper and the computer systems the stores use convert them to an electronic payment. Not a big item in my life I don't let the little shit get me down.

Retired writer perchance?

I enjoyed reading your post.

I don't take checks at my stores unless your old or a regular. The only time a young person whips out a checkbook is if they know their card will be declined.

Blythe1022 06-11-2014 08:42 AM

Even worse than getting behind somebody paying by check is the lady that pulls out an envelope of assorted coupons. Of course they are not pre sorted. Half are no longer valid. It drives me crazy. So does when people bring more items to the checkout than they can afford. Then they start having the person at the register price check everything and deleting one item at a time.

ReelNauti 06-11-2014 08:43 AM

Because I can't remember my friggin pin #

I only use cash or CC. My wife likes her checks. If she wants to write one, so be it.

If she's in front of you, sorry she got there first

Just curious, you ever ask her why?

WPBTH 06-11-2014 09:12 AM

I just assume people who were writing checks, were "floating funds" until pay day. ;?
