Default Should Baseballs Opening Day be another National Holiday?

March. 24 (UPI) -- Budweiser wants the White House to take us all out to the ball game on Opening Day.
The St. Louis beer company's White House petition to have the first day of the season declared a national holiday reached the minimum threshold of 100,000 signatures required for a response from the administration on Friday, several days ahead of the 30-day deadline.

"There's no denying the passion that baseball fans have for America's national pastime," said former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, the campaign's spokesperson. "The more than 100,000 people who signed the petition are just a fraction of the 1.3 million who will attend Opening Day games this year. The day is already an unofficial holiday, but now it's time to make it official."

While the White House has a self-imposed 60-day window to respond to any petitions that hit the 100,000 signature mark, Tom Kraus, the director Budweiser Brand Marketing at Anheuser-Busch InBev, said the conversation is already underway to get an answer before Opening Day arrives next Monday, March 31.

"No doubt everybody would love to have a day off," Kraus said. "But the real goal is having the White House recognize this effort and proclaim it a national day of observance. That really just recognizes how powerful Opening Day itself is across the country. That's the ultimate win."
The petition's text highlighted the role of baseball -- and the start of the season -- as a day for Americans to come together:

MLB Opening Day is more than just the beginning of the season. It’s a symbol of rebirth. The coming of spring. The return of America's national pastime. It’s a state of mind where anything is possible.

You can feel the electricity in the air. Opening Day brings with it the promise of a new beginning. Every fan is in good spirits. It’s a day of celebration. It’s a day of hope. It’s a day that, for generations, has been looked forward to by baseball fans every off-season.

It’s an American tradition, and it deserves to be recognized as an American holiday. Join us in our quest to make sure every American can exercise their inalienable right to celebrate the day those two magical words are uttered for the first time: “PLAY BALL!"

No. It's entertainment......That's it. Also, how many games are played during the day? 1% at best? Perhaps we need a holiday for full contact Ping Pong!

Absolutely not. Baseball is a dying sport. They need to make some major changes or in twenty years nobody is going to care about it.

I was listening to the radio, they were saying going to a baseball game is the experience, not the sport. Nobody cares who wins, there are 162 games! Its a way to get outside, eat some peanuts, and drink a few beers. Not that that is not a worthy cause, it is, but national holiday? Absolutely not.

We have more than enough ridiculous holidays that don't exist to me until the mail doesn't show up or I try to go to the bank.

AB is not an American company anymore so they don't care about the cost to our economy. Another excuse for the lazy to stay home and drink beer.

Baseball sucks. Guys standing around or sitting on their butt for 99% of the game isn't my idea of a sport.

This is being pushed by a brand and I find that offensive.

Y'all laugh but in NC we used to take Easter Monday instead of Easter Friday. The tradition lasted for years. Why? Because NC State played Wake Forest on Easter Monday. We switched back a few years ago to Good Friday but for many years it was Monday because of a baseball game. Put that in your book of useless knowledge.

I'm surprised opening day of baseball doesn't take 48 hours. It is one slow and lengthy game.

It is even polluted at the Little League Level

But as I kid I did love the pick-up baseball/softball games with NO ADULT supervision. Later co-ed softball work league was fun until the high school jocks and accountants took it over, organized it into a league and later even banned drinking beer in the dugouts like till the 4th inning or something

Superbowl should be the Sunday before presidents day.

why do we need another day off for opening day?

if it's important to you take a personal day.

just like MLK should be.

No way. It's their attempt to create a buzz promoting baseball. I bet AB doesn't believe nor expect it to pass.

Be nice to trade another holiday for it. Replace a winter HD with a spring one.

Happy Valentine-Baseball day.

Areas of Michigan used to suspend school on opening day of Deer hunting. Oscoda area for one. So

Many employers were very liberal with leave on that day/week
