Check out Air France's "Premium Economy". Not a lot of seats on every plane but we just flew them to Rome and it was super.

Check with an airline bout booking a bulkhead seat, they have a lot of leg room and if you want you can buy 2 seats and he can spread out. Or look into a cruise to Germany from some east coast area.

I would look into the cruise as well, I cruised to Italy for about the same price as the airline ticket.

I have flown from IAH to FRA many times, and it's way too long to be crammed in the back. You can usually get Business class for under 5K. Shop around and check the flexible dates +/- 3 days search function, and you can usually find a significant dip in price at some point close to your desired travel dates. I have seen 1st Class tickets on this route be over 20K! Hopefully you can score up front for around 3K with persistent shopping.

I fly through Frankfort quite a bit. As suggested above, I would go business class. I have flown first class many times and really it isn't worth the difference in cost over business class. With the newer cabins business class is pretty nice. Even business class tickets can be salty and can average around 7-8k or more.

I use the ITA Matrix all the time. It is the best software out there for pricing flights. I just did a quick search for business class and higher from Houston to Frankfurt and surrounding airports. Take a look, significantly less than $10k: http://matrix.itasoftware.com/view/c...f-3a6c847d4eaa

Looks like going thru Atlanta, Charlotte or Philadelphia are your best options from Houston.

I've flown Boston > Frankfurt several times in the past 2 years, always an aisle seat in coach. I'm 6' even, 190 pounds and I've never felt too cramped.

Lufthansa non-stop is great but pricey.

Aer Lingus thru Dublin is a piece of cake. The tranfer is in the same terminal and you clear US Customs in Dublin on the return flight.

Virgin Atlantic to London and then changing to Berlin Air is fine but the transfer at Heathrow is a pain. Same for Air France thru Charles de Gaulle.

Based on feedback from my German colleagues, I would look at the USAirways thru Philly and Charlotte options.

Lufthansa has a non-stop direct; as does United.

Lufthansa uses an A380, which is fairly comfy, even in cattle class.

10 hour flight.

If on United you can also get direct flights from IAD and ORD.
