Default Dishwasher maintenance job

The appliance quality thread reminded me of some appliance maintenance I needed to do- clean the dishwasher sump. The sump is where all the chunks of stuff that don’t dissolve and wash away will collect. No matter how good the appliance is, if the sump is clogged with crud, the dishwasher won’t work right. It’s a good job to do every couple of years, more often if washing performance drops. Here is a nice video explaining how to do this job on a Kenmore/Whirlpool/Maytag dishwasher.

The only things I’d add- order of work matters, this guy has it right and the two Torx bits needed for my machine were T15 and T10. The work itself is simple and takes less than 20 minutes. One caution- if there is broken glass in the sump, you’re can easily cut your fingers, so probe the sump carefully.

I took enough broken glass, bits of paper labels, string, sunflower seeds and unidentifiable crud out of the sump to almost fill a half-cup measure. If your dishwasher has lately been leaving grit or residue on your dishes, consider doing this simple job.

As I understand, the dishwashers you describe have what's termed a "manual clean" filter. The style in the video have self-cleaning filters, with a chopper blade that passes over a metal screen. Self-cleaning filters add a bit of noise to dishwasher operation, manufacturers who want super quiet machines often go the manual clean route.
