Default Last Minute Check

I got all fired up about going out this early Sunday morning. The plan was to launch at Channel Island Harbor and head to St. Nick. If the conditions were as good as indicated I was going to the Cortez. I checked CSM and it was 22mph where from the Channel Islands to the Mexican border it was 0-5 on the high side and reported glass. Boat was staged, full fuel, poles loaded, gear packed, all trailer lights working perfect, truck topped off and all plugs in the boat. I do a 0200 hours final check before I drive away and my main Rule 1000GPH bilge pump started and quit right then and there. I went into hyper mode making sure it was not a switch or a bad wire until I finally ended up with the pump in my hands holding the bare wire ends directly to the battery terminals to confirm without a doubt it was indeed a bad pump. Scrubbed the fishing trip on what looked as though it was the finest day on the ocean to travel a couple of hundred miles that I have seen in a very long time. I just ordered a Johnson L2200 Heavy Duty submersible bilge pump from Amazon to replace the Rule pump. I am glad nobody was depending on me. I was so looking forward to a day on the water.........

I take it you were not willing to rely on your secondary bilge pump.

Having owned the same boat and put thousands of miles on it, the bilge pump almost never came on. Knowing that boat, I am not sure I could have made the same hard decision you did, but have had to make calls to scrub trips.

Always a tough call but better to err on the side of safety than experience some OH &@$*! moment.

I launch out of that marina regularly, why are you slinging your boat?

The picture is out of King Harbor Marina. Last month I took that picture. If it would have been out of Channel Islands Harbor (CIH) it would have been dark. I have never launched out of CIH. I heard they tore out the regular ramp but there is another ramp close by. Do you know of this?

These things happen from time to time. I have found over the decades that it is never smart to to press a situation and always best to act on the side of safety. Sure I have a Whaler and it doesn't sink, but it sure runs better without 1000lbs of sea water sloshing around in the stern...............Tomorrow is another day....

Not sure about the new ramp at CIH but I launch out of Ventura harbor a lot too which is close by and much easier and less crowded. Try it the next time, you'll like it.
