Default Medicare / under 26

Have been watching Obama Care " sign ups" I am a little lost---- Why are people signing up for medicare-- is it because of income level? Why would a person between 18-26 sign up for insurance when they are covered by parents insurance-- don't have time to read 2000 pages and can't get on yet

You are among many who are "lost". It's natural when a very complicated new law comes into effect.

First, there are three major government health insurance programs:
1. Medicare- only available to people age 65 and older or with permanent disability.
2. Medicaid- only available to low income individuals.
3. Obamacare- popular name for a federal law that mandates almost everyone else buy health insurance from private insurance companies.

Believe you're asking about Obamacare, not Medicare.

Obamacare requires that insurance companies cover dependents up to age 26, unless the dependent is eligible for health insurance through their own employer.

So, couple reasons a person age 18-25 might be looking to buy health insurance through the "Obamacare" exchanges if:
1. They have no living parents or legal guardian.
2. They are eligible for insurance through their own employer, but want a different insurance policy than those offered at work.

Perhaps the person under 26 has no parents who have insurance, and therefore can't carry him on their own policy under ACA. If his income is low enough, he would then sign up for Medicaid.

Sounds like what may be happening----Thus if all the low income people sign up for medicaid ( no costs) how will ACA get enough people to insure us old folks just saw in OR --- ---- 9700 signed up for Medicaid ----Zero for private insurance doesn't sound good!
