Default Strangest thing you have caught with a hook and line

last Sunday morning we were fishing the docks near ocean isle on the ICW. Felt a tap a d thought we had a flounder bite. Waited a moment and began the retrieve and it felt good and then went slack. Reeled on in and had a pair of new reading glasses dangling from the hook and no minnow. Go figure.

I have caught a bunch of weird things...

three rod/reel combos
a boot
an anchor with 100 ft of rode
Plastic bags

But the craziest thing was when I worked on the party boats. Every Tuesday during the summer a kids camp came would charter the boat. Different kids every week, but same counselors. One day one of the counsels dropped a rod over while flounder fishing. Two weeks later, the same counselor caught her own rod back!

I caught a rod and reel in the Alligator river that turned out to be the outfit my father had lost the week before. The amazing part is he lived 140 miles from that spot and had only come up to fish with me and I had to work so he went with my brother.

A 15 lb shackle.

I was working on an oceanographic ship and decided to do some fishing. There was the usual bunch catching a smoke and BSing on the stern. I had to hit the head so I asked someone to watch my rod.

I came back, reeled in the slack and had something on my line. My line was tight and my rod bent over. I would get some slack and then it would take off. It was a long battle but I finally landed it.

They had put a large chain shackle on my line and tossed it out. The shackle sunk in the bottom. The ship was at anchor and would swing. I would take up slack when it was straight back and then as it swung either way it would strip line off. It was a heck of a fight. I was stoked, first one direction and then the next. It was overcast and no shore lights so you couldn't tell the ship was moving

A heck of a good prank. I should have had the shackle mounted

When I was a kid I caught my father with a DB3 crankbait. SInce he was in the boat already I guess it doesnt count. I've caught old rods, a torn up raft and part of a rotted cast net.

I caught a giant eyeball in Lake Erie. Was out fishing with a buddy and his dad right after ice out. I thought I was snagged on the bottom so I pulled with the intent of just breaking my line so I could re-rig. I felt it pull loose but still felt weight on the line so I thought it was a glob of zebra mussels which I have snagged many times. I reel it in and when I pulled it up we were all speechless. Hanging on my hook was an eyeball about the size of a pool cue ball! It had blood vessels hanging off of it and my buddy's dad said to get rid of it b4 he got sick.

I wished I would have kept it because none of us could figure out what the hell it could of come from. There is a rumor about a Lake Erie monster so if I got his eye he is really pissed off and can probably only swim in circles now.

We still talk about it and it happened over 20 years ago. Some people suggested it could have been from a deer that got caught on the ice and the eyeball probably expanded from absorbing water. I've never seen an eyeball outside of a deers head so I have nothing to compare it to but this thing was freaky big so I don't think it was a deer eyeball. I wish I would have had a camera phone back then to at least take a picture to prove it and try to identify it. ;?

I've caught a few fishing rods/reels, actually caught a rock about 2 pounds when my hook caught on zebra mussels that was attached to the rock. I caught a minnow bucket once, and a stringer of 3 walleye and a couple of yellow perch that were all dead and stinky. When fishing at Rice Lake in Canada I caught a stringer of dead bluegills.

STRANGE No. 1:

Was fishing the "second deepest lake" in South America (Lago Ranco in Chile). Two rods out off the stern of the boat, trolling spoons for land-locked Atlantic salmon. Rod No. 1 gets a huge take-down, enough to pull it out of the holder--- over the side she went.

I take a big circle (I'm rowing), go back over the spot (I think it was the spot where Rod No. 1 went over) and suddenly Rod No. 2 gets a take-down. I start reeling and reeling and reeling (it was fishing REAL deep) and WTH, I feel something happening on the other end.

After a pile of reeling I see something coming up from the depths---it's the butt of Rod No. 1. I get the rod in the boat, start reeling back Rod No. 1 and holy shiat, there's a 12 pound Atlantic Salmon on the other end, still pissed off and full of vinegar.

I give the fish the Wood Shampoo and row back to my cabin with two rods and a nice fish

STRANGE No. 2:

I was a kid. I'd just sent away for some trout spinners and that day, I'd gotten them in the mail (from a guy named Gaddabout Gaddis that had a TV show of same name). I'm in my bed room. I rig up a spoon and practice casting across the room (it's opening day for trout the next morning and I'm checking out my tackle)

I flip a cast into the closet. I reel the spoon back in and it feels heavy. It snagged a sock in the closest and it drags the sock across the floor to my feet. Sitting on the sock was Horny the Horned Toad. He'd escaped his cage four months ago and I'd given him up for LOST. He was sitting on the sock, polishing his finger nails, as if to nonchalantly ask: what took you so long? I'm freaking starving!

I caught a Coney Island Whitefish once...for those who don't know what that is it is what we New Yorkers call a used condom floating in the water. I've come across schools of them about a dozen deep. They come from the Sewer plants and make there way into the bay and ocean. Disgusting especially the size of the one I caught. DOUBLE MAGNUM
