Default ATM ate $520 of my cash!

Deposited $600 cash into a local ATM today. My credit union is in Illinois so I use a local ATM that allows me to make deposits to my credit union. I have used it many times in the past but they recently replaced the ATM with a new one.
After I put the cash in, I got a message that some of the bills were unreadable. The ATM returned four crumpled $20 bills that looked like they had been jammed. Then......the little door closed and the transaction cancelled!!!!!
The money does not show as deposited to my account but I did get hit with a $1 transaction fee (just an extra slap in the face).
I went into the bank and basically learned the ATM is a third party deal so I have filed a dispute with my credit union. Other than the ATM coming up $520 over on its balance, I have absolutely nothing to show I put that money in

Stay tuned....

Thought about that. Actually spread out and held up the $80 I got back so it would be recorded but I have no way to prove I put $600 in.

I never make deposits using an ATM. Thanks for pointing out why.

The atm is counted and balanced just like a bank tellers drawer, report the problem and when they balance the atm they will see the overage.

I deposited two checks in an ATM once with no problems. That took balls for me. My buddy and girlfriend use the ATM like a bank all the time. I would never do cash!

Sounds like you got ATM'ed....

Sorry, I couldn't resist throwing in a porn term. However appropriate in this case.

I hope it turns out. Just go to the bank this morning and tell them what happened.

oh, that would suck! Keep us posted. I think you did just convince me to never use an ATM to deposit cash though.

I never put cash into the ATM deposit.

Just yesterday afternoon I deposited $3k (cash). Walked into the teller and handed her the money and asked for a deposit slip. Her response "Oh, it will be so much faster to use the ATM" to which I responded "I never deposit cash in the ATM; I have no proof of what was deposited if there was ever a question". "Oh, that never happens" she lied.

That's when I tell them that if enough people did that......................she would be out of a job.
And I just might be the tipping point.

Same for self serve checkouts at Sam's, etc.

Actually, most banks require 2 tellers verify money coming and out of an ATM..... Most bank people are very honest... While I might be nervous too, I feel confident he will get it back...

Never use the things myself. Even dealing with a teller is no guaranty. About 30 years ago I deposited a $ 28,000.00 check in to my account. It was a company account and the check was the final draw on a large remodel. Several days later I started getting calls that my checks were bouncing, suppliers, subs, etc. Contacted the bank and they had no record of the deposit. Thankfully I have always been anal about keeping receipts and had the deposit slip the teller gave me. The bank never did give a good explanation of what happened , but they did make good on the checks as well as related late fees and shortly afterwards there was some major personnel changes at the bank. Had I not retained the deposit slip I suppose I could have obtained a copy of the canceled check from my customer, but I have always been curious just what happened.

Good luck with your situation.
