I know you said around $1000.00 but I am not sure you have looked at Rainbow. We bought our house and the previous owners had one the the $1000.00 box store specials that was 2 years old when we bought it. About a year later it was falling apart and need to be replaced I spent about $3000.00 on the Rainbow so far everything is fine had it for around a year. I know this has not withstood the test of time but they do back up all structural components (slides, hardware, wood) with a lifetime warrenty and the accesories have a 5 year warranty.

You can start with a small base for less and add on parts to as big as you want it to be.

Check craigslist and other ads in your area for a used Creative Playthings. We used a $2,500 set for around 10 years. Good quality and still in good condition when we sold it on craiglist for maybe $500-$600 once the kids outgrew it. Have seen several others there at good prices as people like to have them out of their yards once they are no longer needed.

We have this Flexible flyer from Walmart for about 100 - 130 bucks new and 1.99 shipping or whatever. its 2 years old and looks new - kids love it. Seesaw/slider thingie, strap swing for little ones and a regular swing and attached slide. And extra swing for when they outgrow the strap/bucket swing. You have to anchor it when they get bigger. No rust on it after 2 years and no signs of wear. Kid has a multi grand wood one at his house and loves this as much. The wood ones can look shabby after a while. Heck I am just freecycleing it or chucking t when the grandkids get a few years older. I think t's a Flexible Flyer.

We bought a rainbow set about 9 years ago and last spring we stained with a new coat of red-wood stain. Looks brand new.
