Default Your take on the ammo shortage

Anyone wonder how it's possible that just about every configuration (grain/bullet type/) of every caliber from rimfire on up, from every manufacturer, has been out of stock for over a year?

What's your take on what's going on here?

Not a shortage of ammo, over abundance of new buyers and hoarders/gougers.

Get creative online, I have been buying ammo non stop, throughout the entire "shortage" and have been paying normal to slightly above normal prices.

Back to the over abundance of new buyers. Most of these impulse (never owned a firearm before) buyers.... well, they now have guns. IMO Firearm "accidents" are going to skyrocket in the near future.

This is my take, I am sure plenty will disagree.

I have plenty - but then again - I bought plenty long before the "shortage." That said - now I don't shoot as much because I can't replace what I have... bad cycle to be in.

It is available, it just sells as fast as it comes in. I swing by a few places once a week and pick up a box here and a box there when I see it on the shelf. It sells out the same day it comes in though so you just have to keep watch. These are at places that have not over inflated the prices.

As above, I have not been shooting as much due to these circumstances.

Same here, I have cases upon cases in a large safe, but I would have normally shot all that up and replaced with new by now. Unfortunately the craze has made me tighten my belt and think before I spend an afternoon plinking.

To the above poster, I could very well be wrong but I don't see that scenario being possible. All the "old" gun owners in America tally more than the "new" owners. Second, if sales were up with hoarders and new owners, surely the manufacturers would have stepped up production to meet demand by now.

Let's face it, if know they can sell it, they're sure as heck gonna make it as quickly as possible and get it on the shelf.

What shortage? I've got plenty and I didn't overpay for any of it. I'll admit that I can't walk into a shop or pick up the phone and get whatever I want but....

Glad I'm not a trap team this year Bought some 20ga and nearly had a MI!!

Over the last few months I have noticed availability has gotten progressively better and prices are starting to come back down.

Supply is increasing. That's a good sign. Bad sign is reloading supplies still aren't returning to normal. Hornady just suspended 150 different types of ammo and projectiles until 2014.....that sucks

Not doubting you but can you give us a link. Everything I have read says they are changing the ORM-D stickers but not a lot is going to change, except as you noted, price. I haven't been able to find anything where UPS or FedEx are going to change much. ??? ;?

Don't get me wrong, I think this administration will do everything they can, even through various agencies, to mess with us but apparently the new sticker won't be that much of an issue. If I am wrong please show me because I have been trying to keep up with this for at least the last month. If I am wrong I'll be the first to admits it.

I stopped at the LGS today and asked about 22lr, they had some Remington Thunderbolt which is about the dirtiest, foulest, crappiest ammo in 22lr you can use, I passed.

Personally, I wish I had stocked up more than I did. Probably have more than some, not as much as others. About 2,000 rounds .22, 2,000 round,s of 9mm, and 1,000 rounds of 12 gauge shot (trap rounds). Hard to go to the range knowing more is not available.

We have had a ton of new gun buyers eager to practice shooting their new guns. That has put the demand through the roof. Still doesn't explain it in my opinion though.

Do the same thing, been picking up 223/5,56, 9mm, 10 mm every chance I get PLUS making sure I have plenty fo primers, powder & bullets for rifles that I reload for

Several years ago I did not realize there was a very limited supply till I ran out of large magnum rifle primers for my 7 mag & 300 Mag. Just walked into local store to pick up some and they laughed at me. Thought they were kidding but they were not

Bought a couple 1K packs each of regular rifle primers and large magnum then and even though I do not shoot that much they have a good shelf life

With the guburmant buying hundreds of millions of rounds , and the ammunition sales sky rocketing due to control efforts and gun sales exploding due to gun haters, this all makes old Hussan about the biggest and most successful gun dealer in history.

Default Hopefully its just a media driven phase

People are afraid of being told they can't have something in this day and age. With all the media hype about proposed gun laws, ammo is being bought as quick as it arrives on shelves. Remington claims to be producing at max capacity still although store shelves suggest otherwise. If you come accross it, buy it.

Please share your secret. If not publicly, then please shoot me a PM. I have been watching the online auction sites as well as Armslist.com and there is plenty for sale but the prices are simply insane and as long as people keep paying those prices, it will never come down. It is unfortunate that those that seem to be getting it are trying to gouge it.

then there are the online dealers. I used to like luckygunner.com before this mess, but the prices are simply nuts. I hope that is because they are paying more and not that they are gouging. at the time of my posting this they have 45 different brands/types available of 9 mm and most of those they 100+ units in stock of each. HOWEVER, the CHEAPEST price per round is $0.41/round and that is for once-fired FMJ brass in bags of 100. PMC Brass FMJ is ON SPECIAL at $0.51/round. Hopefully they will come back down when/if this craziness subsides.

the other online that seems to have plenty of stock INCLUDING .22 LR is Cheaperthandirt. However, their prices are so high it borders on incomprehensible. They are the only place I have found that has CCI Mini-Mags but the PRICE IS 59.99/100 ROUNDS! see here:

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/AMM076

I used to pay 8.99/100 at the LGS/range!

Cheaper Than Dirt raised their prices to astronomic levels the day after the Newtown shooting! IMO they can go F themselves - I will not buy from them.

As long as some people keep paying these prices, this shortage will never end! the manufacturers are running 3-4 shifts and are operating 24/7. I posted once before about looking into opening an ammo manufacturing facility and still think there is a niche for it. But I am about 1000x short on the start-up capital.

Its a shame to as I love to shoot and try to go to the range AT LEAST 1x per week, and my SON loves it, but I am down to less than 3K rounds of .22 LR and 700 rounds of 9MM! I love to shoot the 9 MM I have, but I can go through 300 rounds in less than 2 hours at the range
