Default My best friend Rebel..

I don't normally post things personal, but I am making an exception for an exceptional dog.

My best friend passed away in my arms last night. He was 9 years old. He was diagnosed with acute liver failure less than a week ago. He passed away with his family petting him and telling him everything would be OK.

Best boy anybody could ever hope for. Ever.

I hate threads like this. My heart goes out to you, man. My old girl is just over 14. I know one day I'll be in your shoes -- and I really don't want to think about it.

Nice dog! I'm sorry for your loss, when you live with a dog for that long they really do become like a family member and when they pass it's like losing a family member. blessings to you and your family.

Tears are welling up as I type this.....

Damn shame to lose such a fine friend at that age.

It's tough when our best of friends pass on and leave us here to stumble through our lives without them..

God bless you and your family in these times of sorrow..

I'm sorry for your loss.... but keep posting... threads like this help to lessen the pain a tiny bit...

May I ask what brand were you feeding him?
My 8 YO Rott/Dob died of something similar and since than I'm being told that there's some studies that link liver problems to the dog food.
Edit: hope the picture helps... do not personally like GSDs but here is my puppy playing with one of her best friends, our neighbor's 3 month old..

I'm so sorry. They're family members and losing them is heart-breaking. We put our Springer to sleep last month and it was devastating.

Hang in there man.

So sorry. I lost my 6 year old best friend, "Cheyenne" , 2 years ago. The coolest White Shepherd ever. Still miss the ole gal. Best fishing buddy ever! Would jump in after a passing fish... Like a polar bear! . Know what you're all feeling. Know you're all in all our thoughts....all who have felt the love, and the loss.

Mahalo, and Aloha. To all lost friends.

From all us dog people who do understand your loss. To you and your best friend Rebel.. RIP

God promised at the birth of time,
A special friend to give,
His time on earth is short, he said,
So love him while he lives.

It may be six or seven years,
Or twelve or then sixteen,
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care of him for me?

A wagging tail and cold wet nose,
And silken velvet ears,
A heart as big as all outdoors,
To love you through the years.

His puppy ways will gladden you,
And antics bring a smile,
As guardian or friend he will,
Be loyal all the while.

He'll bring his charms to grace your life,
And though his stay be brief,
When he's gone the memories,
Are solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return,
But lessons only a dog can teach,
I want you each to learn.

Whatever love you give to him,
Returns in triple measure,
Follow his lead and gain a life,
Brim full of simple pleasure.

Enjoy each day as it comes,
Allow your heart to guide,
Be loyal and steadfast in love,
As the dog there by your side.

Now will you give him all your love,
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call,
To take him back again?

I fancy each of us would say,
"Dear Lord, thy will be done,
For all the joy this dog shall bring,
The risk of grief we'll run.

"We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known,
Forever grateful stay.

"But shall the angels call for him,
Much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
And try to understand."
