Default Manatee broke my skeg off

I was pulling out of my marina over the long weekend when I noticed some splashing in the water about 20-30 feet away to my right side.
I thought okay, might be some manatees nearby.
Then I placed one throttle to neutral.
All of a sudden a manatee pops up along the starboard side of the boat. I'm looking down at him from my helm now. Things about 6-7 feet long.
I then place my other throttle to neutral. I wasn't sure where he was going so I thought I'd just try and coast by him at 1-2 knots.
Suddenly he makes a left turn under the boat. I'm hoping now he just keeps going and I'll just glide by him.
Next thing I know the stern of my boat is lifted about a foot from the water. Then the manatee popped out from behind my swim platform in line with the starboard motor. The dock hands saw the whole thing and couldn't believe it. They shouted my swim platform was a foot out of the water.
My boat had to be right at 12,000lb with full fuel.
I get the boat back to the dock, pull it out and the dam skeg is missing. Now I do have these sorry ass XDP outdrives that are all composite. They probably wouldn't have broken if they were metal.
This is a very expensive repair.

What brand of outdrives do you have? Never heard of composite outdrives.

Volvo Penta XDP drives. These drives were plagued with leaking bellows problems. As well as the obvious problem if you damage your skeg it can't be repaired, you have to get a whole new unit.

Insurance should cover that... Striking a unknown underwater object. Mine bought me a new out drive last year.

Really shocked the skeg snapped off that easy.

You would think that. This thing had to be literally trying to lift my whole boat by it. Probably not straight up either. Maybe some kind of angle mixed in with it.

Revenge of the manatee! We now have manatee vigilantes. Where will they strike next?

I would kill this thread if I was you. If LEO finds out you came into contact with a manatee you will be in trouble no matter how cautious and responsible you were being! Just some friendly advice.

Thanks but I'm not worried about LEO over a manatee that decided to run INTO ME. Then try and lift my boat out of the water causing over $7000 in damage.

I would report that manatee to LEO for leaving the scene of an accident.
