Default Legal moonshine - good, bad, or the same?

Running low on my ill-eagle stuff, is the legal stuff pretty much the same or lower proof or what? Anyone tried the legal stuff that has experience with the other kind?

As a lot of the illicit shine out there today is actually "rum" made mostly from white sugar using the super hybrid yeast strains that can survive in a 20%+ solution of their own poop, finding a quality producer may not be easy. The legal stuff is more likely to be made from corn. If you want to try something interesting but expensive, grab a bottle of Buffalo Trace white dog. You can actually taste the rye in the mash bill. As for proof, anything higher than around 130 proof is going to either give you a headache or be vodka that has been distilled multiple times to get the taste of the grain out.

Thanks, l hardly drink the stuff, but like to have it on hand for the guest that asks! it's always fun to watch! Kind of a spectator sport I enjoy.

At least you know it's safe. If you want full-kick raw alcohol, there is a product called "Everclear" which is in the high 190's proof range. The ostensible purpose of this material is for folks to make their own cordials and such. I expect there are other brands that are identical but this is the only brand name I am familiar with.

I haven't priced it out but I expect it's cheaper than the legal moon-shine brands.

I haven't seen Everclear since my underage drinking days. They banned the sale of it in Florida many years ago. That stuff made wicked hunch-punch.

Everclear and Golden Grain are both grain alcohols and not moonshine (corn whiskey) I have tried a few of the store bought brands and IMHO none of them are up to snuff compared to the real thing. There is some cherry brandy out there that was pretty good, but I can't remember the name though.

I'm in the same boat as the OP as my supplier passed away. He was in his late 80's and had been making his stuff for 60 something years, so I know his likker didnt get him!

In that case, get the cheapest vodka on the shelf and dump it in a jug. If your guests say "Hey. This isn't half-bad." tell them they've been drinking it too long!
