Default Puerto Rico - suggestions needed

So some of you guys may remember my questions on Key West last year. Tickets got purchased etc but due to my deevorce the trip didn't happen. ;? I ended up with a credit at SW Airlines and decided to fly into San Juan in August for a week instead of Key West. Found a great deal at VRBO so place to sleep is already covered. I may be going solo or with a lady friend and need some direction on:
1) places to eat - reasonable prices for breakfast but splurge on dinner
2) Is vieques too far for day trip? Thinking 1/2 day on beach and then do the bio-luminescence tour that evening
3) Any other suggestions?

Appreciate any direction.

Are you staying in Old San Juan? Vieques is a little far for 1 day. They have the best bio bay. The one in Fajardo is decent. Are you renting a car?

Staying at Condado along Ashford Ave. Yes on renting a car unless I find all I need near there. Wouldn't mind blending in with the locals. Really would like to do the bay trip at Visques unless I burn up a day getting there.

Edit: But I will be going to Old San Juan....

The cheapest way to get to Vieques is by the ferry in Fajardo. They can be a bit tricky. When on Vieques you really need a jeep to get around and go see things, beaches, towns, etc. The bio bay tours start at 7 and run until midnight. The last ferry back to the mainland departs Vieques at 6. If you do go, make sure to go to the beaches in the wildlife refuge and eat at soul food(blue truck at the enterance to the refuge)

Thanks Dillard. Sounds like a bio bay tour in Vieques is out for this trip if tours start at 7 and last ferry leaves for mainland at 6.

They have a good bio bay trip in Fajardo. There are also a few good places to eat right where the tours start.

We used the company above and had a blast!

Renting a car is a must. We drove the coast from Fajardo in the NE to the dry desert in a day, and saw dozens of secluded beaches- each one different.
