Sounds like the gun/pad was left in a hot car or something and it is messed up. Probably be easier to get a new pad...

Remington is well aware of the problem. Same thing was happening on my 280. Called Remington, gave them the serial # off my rifle and they sent me a new pad. It was not hard to swap them out.
