Default Lets talk commercial flights

What do you guys use to get the best deals on fllights, I use Kayak.com, then I have a certain airlines credit card which earns me miles. I know purchasing 6 weeks out usually yields the best rates.

Kayak, Cheap Tickets, Orbitz, etc. all use the same algorithms to extract the airline prices from the carriers websites with the exception of Southwest and a few other airlines. I usually use those websites to obtain the prices and then go back to the airline website to book the ticket. Why? Because it's easier to cancel, change flights, pick seats, etc. on the airline website than the 3rd party platforms. Credit card points, etc., have never come into play for my travel booking and I fly about 75K miles a year. While points are great, no one every gets rich collecting them.

I first glance at Orbits/kayak whatever to see who the preffered carriers are then go to the Airlines Web site, I can think of only one time where the ticket was so much cheaper on a third party site that I used.

I usually fly 3 times month...US Air / American /Swiss / Emirates gets me every where I need to go...

I usually use Expedia or Kayak. They usually yield the same thing.

Usually my biggest savings come from a willingness to use several airports. Nashville or Chattanooga now, or Lauderdale / West Palm / Miami when I lived in Florida.

For what it is worth I use Orbitz and double check their cost against the airline directly (that I obtain from Orbitz.)
If the cost is close within a few bucks, I'll book direct with the airline.

The day of the week when you book is also very important.

I have seen as much as 15% increase on Thursday through Sunday Night compared to Monday through Wednesday night!

Also browse in private mode (I know you all know what that is...). As it hides your cookies. Kayak, Orbitz, etc. all look at your cookies to see where you price shopped before giving you their prices. Works a good percentage of the time but not always.

Another good one, with perhaps the best UI in the industry, is http://www.hipmunk.com/

Especially nice if you're dealing with flights with layovers as it gives a visual duration view of the flight options.

I use Kayak if I know I need to fly 2 different airlines on the same trip. Just to get the best options Kayak is good. But I book them all through the airlines website. I fly only USAir and a little American. They will be one in the same soon.
