You won't find the demand for "shingle" roofs and siding in Florida that we have up here. They mostly use concrete tile and barrel tile roofs. They also tend to lean towards stucco and EIFS exteriors rather than siding. Although you will find shingles and siding being installed in developments from time to time. It is EXTREMELY competitive too. Also, the "red tape" as you call it is horrendous in Florida. From just getting your license, which is a beeeeeotch in itself, to the manpower, or lack there-of I should say. I Have my Class A (General Contractors) license in Florida and it was REALLY tough to get. Lots of classes (to prepare for the two day exam) and then the exam itself, which is pretty tough mentally. I passed on my first try though with an 88%. I think the passing rate is only about 40%Having said that, if you have your heart set on it, it is Florida and with the probability of Tropical storms and hurricanes, job security is almost a given.

Thanks for the reply, I hear ya on the red tape, Ive heard the horror stories!, Ill prob only take the roofing test instead of the class A Contractors test, (which allows you to do anything correct?). But what id really like to know is what there gettin down there per sqft>? is it the same as here, or drasticaly diff? I really think its the same, I mean materials arent any cheaper in Fla.....are they??

No, materials are about the same, maybe cheaper because of the volume that is being sold. EVERYWHERE you look they are building something! It's absolutely crazy! The key factor is cost of manpower. A GOOD roofing "mechanic" who would normally make approx. $18 - $20 /hr up our way would be LUCKY to get $12 / hr. in Florida. And it's very, very competitive. You'd be better off opening up a roofing supply house!

Yeah....well up here everything is sub-contracted, and paid by piece work or "by the square ft", so im really just curious what fla. subs are charging per sqft, so then i could figure out what the "generals"(me) are charging the customers. Example, up here if a new roof cost the customer $10per sqft or "$100 per sq (a sq is a roofing & siding term for 100sqft, a 10'x10' section), then the subcontractor would get $2,50 per sqft or $25 per sq, to install it!, subtract that labor cost plus the cost of material to do the job and the balance is the general cont. profit margin.... this is how its done here, i need to know if this is how they do it down there, and if so whats the going rate per sqft?

You're almost insulting me Just kidding Thats pretty much how they do it there. You sign "West Coast Roofing" to do the work and the sub it out to Hose "A" and Hose "B"' Roofing for the install. You might want to call some of the suppliers in that area and pick there brains or call a couple roofing installers. I don't have any of my contacts from Florida or I'd give them a call for you.
