Default House broken into...need shotgun advice.

The other day someone broke into my house while me and my roommate were home and walked upstairs into my other roommates room and stole his laptop. Long story short, I need a shotgun for home defense. I have a 12 ga for skeet shooting but I want more ammo capacity and better mobility.

Been thinking about either a Remington 870 or Moss 500. I live in a condo so I was thinking of loading two shells of birdshot followed by buckshot. Figure the first two have greatest chance of missing and if I do hit them they will slow him down so I can put the buckshot on target. (Worried about my neighbors/over penetration)

Thoughts?

You might be surprised how much penetration birdshot has at close range.

You have a 12 ga. IMO you need an alarm system more than another shotgun.

No crap a 12Ga. can knock a door down or a CB wall. You need better locks and find out what the Folly Beach Police response is. Bet if you called them and said a guy with a beer is trying to break in they will be there is skinny min.

Bird shot is for birds. Anything that can stop an intruder will not be stopped by drywall. Bird shot would be a mistake for a number of reasons.

#4 buck is the ideal self defense ammo. I'd load it with #4 buck and nothing else. You could go bigger, but #4 buck is the best combination of pellets big enough to stop somebody, yet still give you a better pattern.

Is your current 12 ga. a pump or semi auto? You can take out the plug and get 4 or 5 shells in the mag. You can buy a mag extention tube and get 8 in there.

I was hunting ducks and killed a deer with #6 Steel Shot as it was crossing the marsh from 30 yards. I'm sure it can stop a human if you shoot it in the face or chest.

So tell us how this theif broke into your place, went upstairs and took a computer, walked back down the stairs and out the door, completely undetected by both you or your roomate. Why did he only take your roomate's computer? Why not your gun? How is another gun going to help you stop a person that you don't know is in your place from robbing you? Did your roomate tell you where he got that weed?

I have a 870 for birds and thought about getting a 18" cyl bore barrel for it but even that was pricey.

I purchased a Moss 500 with 18" barrel (aprox $300) ..... It's load with 7 rd of 2 3/4" 00 buck. 00 buck is 9 qty, .30 cal pellets.

Don't confuse #4 bird shot with #4 BUCK shot. Most self defense gurus recommend #2 buck as a minimum. (stay away from bird shot)

What good is a shotgun if you aren't home when the house is broken into? If you want to prevent or minimize a burglary, have an alarm installed. If you need another weapon, buy the Taurus Judge and load it with PDX1 410 shells.

What? How the hell did that happen? He must own some killer weed.

I missed that point. So I am supposed to believe a man risked being shot to death to steal a laptop. His roommate is full of shit. To the OP, get another roommate.
