Wife and kids? Let her pick where to live. What are her must haves? New Orleans has the most culture but you'll most definitely have to put kids in private school. Nice housing is expensive.

Baton Rouge and suburbs have nice schools but traffic is a pain. Housing is more abundant in the suburbs. Hammond, to me, seems the most bland but you'll be close to work. Lafayette is a couple hours away and has decent schools.

Gulfport/Biloxi areas feel more coastal to me, if that's what you like. Casinos seem to be the focus in those areas.

Mandeville/Covington is a really good option. Quick shot to Hammond, good public schools, and easy access to north shore of Lake P. And you'll be fairly close to New Orleans.

For K-8th grade on the Northshore (Slidell & Madisonville) there is nothing better than Lake Castle and it does not kill the bank acct either. Plenty of good High School options in the area.

Heck, move to Wiggins. Neighbors are a little shady but you can't have it all.
