Default My GE Dishwasher caught on fire! GE IS THE WORST!!

A couple years ago GE came out with a recall for 1.3 Million dishwashers due to a risk of fires withing the control panels. I have two dishwashers in my kitchen (which is awesome) and had the recalls performed on both.

So Thankfully I was standing right next to my dishwasher the other night when I smelled burning wires. Not five seconds later black smoke was billowing out of the dishwasher. I blasted down to my basement and killed the power as fast a I could and it was over. It happened so fast that there's no doubt the house would have burned even if I had been in the other room. Crazy!

So my wife won't use the other dishwasher because she's too fearful and I don't blame her. GE is replacing the burnt unit but they are only willing to give me about $100 off list on replacing the other unit since they say "there's nothing wrong with it". It's a high end unit with a $1200 list. I'm getting nowhere with there customer support and they refuse to escalate me to higher level.

So, What do you think is fair concerning the second unit and what do you think I should do about it? I don't want to get attorneys involved because it's just not my style.

Thanks

It felt good just to vent a little.

Why would you put another GE unit in after that? I think I would be done with them at this point.

My mom remodeled the kitchen with a GE range and GE microwave. Both needed control panels under warranty, the microwave died and we replaced it with a sharp....I will NEVER buy GE

The one that burned is being replaced for free so I think I'd be a fool not to take it. It feels like thay are doing it as a matter of policy and when it comes to deviating from policy to make sure I'm at all OK with what happened the could not care less. They don't care about me or my satisfaction one bit. It's a terrible way to do business.

My daughter came home from school today! and got a glass of water from our GE "smartwater" refridge.when she took the glass away, the water didn't stop coming AT FULL POWER. she called me in a panic, water pouring all over the floor. I got her and luckily a friend she had over ,to tag team with pots and pans till I could get there to shut off the water! I tried to guide her on the phone to the water shutoff, shes 12 and all stressed out at this point, It wasn't happening.
The door on this unit was replaced in it's 1st year, never really worked right.
THE POINT: yes, GE is Friggen expensive CRAP. never again.
By the way, anyone have a clue how to repair this . I believe its electronic and not a mechanical problem.

Have a GE Profile that's freezing up on the coils and building up ice in the fridge side. Have an 8 - 5 window for service Wednesday. Had the same issue in Oct and they replaced a sensor. They're telling me I need a fanastat or some such thing added because of the humidity. Losing my patience with these assholes.

Start with the filter. Girlfriend has one with (not GE) the water in the door and first time she changed the filter the water wouldn't shut off.

That sucks. I've replaced the computer in my fridge 4 times. GE stuff really does suck but I'm really not looking to bash as much as I'm looking for advice as to what I should accept as fair treatment from GE on this. Should I just accept there offer of one free unit while paying $100 under retail for the other? They've already made it clear that it's there one and only offer so If I should go further where to I take this?

I'm not looking for revenge or to hurt the company out of spite. The whole thing just sucks. I sure feel lucky not to have lost the house and that no one got hurt.

Jay, sorry to here about the bu!!chit you are going through

Tell them not to replace the 2nd unit, they will be replacing your house the next time, it is all good

Scrap them. Go get another manufacturer's, to close a call for something like that to happen to your family if you weren't home

I will say, I was shocked when I first read this, then I realized all my appliances are GE profile, I ran into the kitchen I forgot, I went with a kitchen aid for the dishwasher, just always new they were the masters of dishwashers when I redid my kitchen

GE has, sadly become garbage. I have a 20 year old fridge in the garage that works great. The 4 year old replacement when we remodeled the kitchen is a POS. The ice maker has never worked properly....the water freezes up in the door...GE has been out 3 times and says there is nothing wrong with it. Never again.

Bought my wife a front load washer and dryer (GE) The friggin' washer shakes and the drum moves around inside so much it bangs against the outer housing, (even with the owners manual recommended amout of load) Every time I hear it banging around downstairs it makes me sorry I didnt buy a 20 year old toploader off of craigslist. At least I could fix it when it quit. What a P.O.S.!

First, Let me state that I have no love for GE.

However, I will play Devil's Advocate here.

They are replacing the one that burned and they are offering you some money off of retail purchase of the 2nd one that you have. Your post states that they recalled 1.3 million machines and "fixed" them." Yet, even though both of yours had the warranty work performed, one still went on fire.

Do you have any statistics, or at least some research, into how many machines still had the issue after the warranty fix was performed? Is it on the internet that others had fires even after the warranty "fix?"

It is simply not feasible for them to be able to replace the "fixed" machine without it having any problem simply because your wife is scared of it now. Are they supposed to simply replace 1.3 million machines even after they "fixed" them?

More information is needed here; specifically, how effective the warranty "fix" was/is. If there are others out there that have gone on fire after the "fix" than you have a valid issue and the manufacturer needs to step up to the plate with either another "fix" or a better offer on replacement. However, if you can find no other instances of this happening to other "fixed" machines, then I think you need to decide if you want a different brand, a new GE with the $100 off, or live with the one that did not have the fire and was "fixed" under warranty. Without more supporting information that the machine is still unsafe, I do not think there is anything to do to "take the issue further." I do not think a lawyer would take a case such as that - unless you agree to pay his/hers fees which will very quickly amount to much more than buying a new dishwasher would be.

Again, I have no love for GE and certainly no affiliation, I am just trying to offer another perspective. If I were the OP, I would be very pissed and I would do as another suggested above; let them replace the machine that went on fire and then sell both and buy a different brand that I have more confidence in and move on.
