Default Denali National Park

Wife and I are going to Denali with Holland America CruiseTour.

Will be there for three days starting this May 22.

Anybody have any 'Don't miss' stuff?

Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Call up Talkeetna Air Taxi, or other small plane company in Talkeetna.

Book a ski plane to make the full loop around Denali and land on Ruth Glacier (iirc).

One of the highlights of my life.

Also, white water rafting on the Nenana River is a blast.

Plane on being there a few days if you want to see the mountain, it is out about 1 out of 3 days on average.

Denali is neat. It is kind of a downer the only way to see it is on an old school bus with a bunch of other people but it is what it is.

Are you coming on a cruise ship before/after? If so wave when you enter Glacier Bay.

One road in, one road out. We booked everything away from the ship so we could do as we pleased. If you book the bus through the park online it will save you a few $. You book with specific time you want to be on the tour. Our trip turned out amazing, did the helicopter, float plane trains whitewater rafting................. You will have a great time!

Here are 3 pictures from 2007, one is how you normally see it, a rainbow on the mountain, and looking DOWN at a moonrise. We saw rain, snow, sun and clouds all on the same yellow bus trip with a very cool driver. When we flew from Anchorage to Fairbanks on Alaska Airlines, the pilot of the 757 came on the com and said "rare day to see Mt. Denali with no clouds, let me take you down closer for a better look" and flew the plane real close where we could see tents set up and the rocky cliff of the north face. Unreal trip, you have a lot to look forward to.

Sure. I still can't believe we bought Alaska for 2 cents / acre.

I will be fishing on May 28. Be on the lookout for the "Pioneer" (name of boat). You will be coming right by me at some point.

Here is a teaser for you, I took this the other day flying over the Chugach range. I'll see if I can dig up some pics of the Denali flight.

For security reasons never post future plans on the Internet, but if you have to don't post the date and time you will be gone.

Just my opinion.

The McKinley fly-over is a must do. As was previously stated, the peaks are frequently enveloped in clouds, so with a little luck you'll get a shot at a good day. Our trip up there blessed us with 7 of 10 days with great skies. We stayed 3 nights in cabins outside the park and another 7 days at the backcountry lodge inside the park. It was an altogether great trip that I would do again.

The bus ride is cool. Until your bus driver starts stopping to let you take pictures of these little mouse like creatures she is obsessed with, every seven minutes.

I totally understand the need to not have numerous private vehicles tearing through one of the most amazing parks in our nation, but damn the latter portion of that ride was just painful.

Definitely see McKinley.

And if you don't already have a good DSLR camera, buy one and learn how to Use it before the trip. Alaska is the most photogenic place I've ever been.

Looks like our bus tour is 6 to 8 hours. Not sure if it's a school bus type or a cruise bus.

Pictures I've seen show school buses.

Got the DSLR and am studying up on it.

Calling Talkeetna Air tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks folks.
