Default Flying with fishing gear

The carry on thread got me thinking... I'm flying to Florida soon and intend to bring some tackle with me. I have the rod case but what about the reels, terminal tackle, plugs, etc? I can imagine they'd give me a hard time about carrying on spooled reels. Being I'm checking the rods, should I check a bag and put everything in there? The plugs and terminal tackle I'm not too worried about but the reels? Think they'll be safe? I have a good amount of money invested in them and can't afford to have them stolen, damaged, or lost. Same goes for the rods.
