Default Social media sites...

I hate um... How the hell do you get the point across to kids ... Everything ... Every single thing you post is subject to be seen and known by others. I don't wont people to know when I'm not at home in my house... Or when I'm in line at the Cheesecake Factory or seeing a picture of inappropriate nature.. Down the road you loose a job oppitunity or get fired for a inappropriate comment... How the hell do you get a 18 year old to understand... My daughter hates my guts because my thoughts and what I feel is inappropriate ... And my whole dam life has been about her and providing for her what I lacked for and raising a good person.... Dammit .... Just a bad day here...

Use the media site Google to your advantage, and search for the individuals who have lost their job due to inappropriate postings.
And if it helps, as a hiring manager for a major corporation, you can let her know that the first thing I do is search Facebook / Twitter to see if the person I am about to interview ~ has anything that I would not like to see hanging out in cyberspace.

My son is a chemical engineer. He has had to spend several days out of state covering a plant where the plant manager was fired after he posted on facebook that he was sh-it faced at 2- 3 in the morning. To bad his boss was on his friends list. When he showed up at the plant that morning (late) he was met by 2 security guards, asked to pee in a cup, then escorted off the property never to return.

The plant uses a lot of chlorine which is really nasty stuff. What a dumb azz.

I just don't understand young people today. I didn't have the obstacles when I was younger the kids do today and have only one daughter ... Have been on the road for 25 years and recently made a mistake in my marriage .. I'm not perfect and have tried to share my feelings with my kid and its all back fired.. I've never wanted anything less for her and have continued my occupation to provide the best I could.. Dammit just gave her a new BMW.. Do everything I can for her, maybe trying to make up what I sacrificed I don't know.... But just had a heated argument from issues I saw with social media... She takes every picture of me down, of her car... And with out a doubt hates me because that's her lines of communicating with friends... I want to bust her phone shut off the Internet service .. Let her see how it is without my support for her... Not the mention the chit hit the fan this week with me and mom.. And I'm defiantly the hated right now ... On the road no one to vent with ... Heading home now .. Don't know what I'm going home to other than a bad situation ...

I'm responsible for the Risk Mgmt department for a medium sized company. We always check social media sites when we are considering hiring someone. We also troll them using a social media monitoring tool. We have fired, and not hired, more people due to social media posts than I can count. It is actually pretty sad.....and stupid on their part.

I'm paraphrasing, but there was a quote that went something like "When I was 14, my father was clueless. When I was 21, I couldn't believe how much he had learned in 7 years."

I might not have it exact, but you get the idea.there are certain areas where parents don't get it, but most kids are too stupid to realize that there are certain areas that they as kids don't get either. We know that one stupid move now can haunt you for the rest of your life.

Kids don't understand how the wayback machine works. If I'm hiring someone for a job, I'm going to scour the internet for any evidence of you I can find. If I find facebook postings from Fridays where you are discussing what you want to do on the weekend, I'll make assumptions on your work ethic.

As a Telecom/IT Recruiter I spend alot of time having people take dumb crap off of linkedin/facebook/twitter etc. Funny thing is most people act like it's no big deal. I think I am the only 25yr old on the planet who has never had a facebook/twitter etc account.

I have had twit, FB, all that crap never did get into the pictures but only took a short time to realize there's very little good can come out of the sharing of personal information and private photos. I deleted them all. Thanks again guys ... I'm just trying to avoid a kammakozie landing when I get home.. It ain't easy being me right now...

Facebook is one the worst regarding privacy settings too. It seems like they change the damn things once every couple of months. Isn't it something like now companies will get you to 'like' their fb page as part of the job process, just so they can look at your profile and pics?

To the OP, I agree with bringing up stories of bad stuff happening to people to your daughter to see if that hits a note. Maybe too if you just Google her name and physically show her how easy it is for a perp to get that information. I guarantee one of the first couple of links will be a link to her fb page.

PS - The best one is the 4square app, you know where you "check in" to places that you visit. Well if everyone knows exactly where you are (because there's a timestamp), then they also know where you aren't. I think there was a website that fed off of this called robmyhouse.com or something like that a while back but they had to take it down because perps decided to do exactly that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This.

The reality is, the life you knew growing up was RADICALLY different than the one she did/does. I'm betting your kid doesn't know what an encyclopedia is, or the dewey decimal system, or hell, even what the inside of a library looks like.

It happens to every generation. My kids are young, and I can't even begin to imagine the shit that's gonna frustrate me when they get older.

As for the social media stuff, flip your outlook on it. You're away alot, and your daughter posting on those things lets you know what's going on in her life. Gives you insight you wouldn't have had with a traveling job just 10 years ago.

Best of luck fixing the issues.

I hear ya weekend hooker. Have 4 kids here and it is a thankless job. To be honest, you want to make a point? Take the computer out of the house. NO is a very important word when parenting......like "daddy can I have a bmw"......"NO".

As someone said though, this too shall pass. If you raised her right she will thank you when she gets older and will understand although she doesn't now.
