Yesterday at Walmart- .22 LR ammo purchase!!!!

So, cruising the local Walmart and I wandered to the firearms counter. WAIT- I see boxes of CCI Mini Mags for $7.29. I wait at the counter for an employee to help me. A minute or so later, another customer wanders up to the counter. Then a clerk comes to help.

Me- "I see CCI Mini-Mag .22LR on that shelf. I want to buy 3 boxes (the posted limit on ammo purchases)". Other customer looks distressed. Clerk- "Hmmm- only 2 boxes here." Other customer drops his shoulders in total defeat. Me- "Hey, pal, I'll buy one, you buy the other." Shooters should stick together in these troubled times, right? Other customer perks up.

Clerk sells me a box first. Clerk- "Is this for a handgun?" Me, without hesitation- "No." Clerk takes money, bags order and I start to walk away. Clerk asks other customer "Is this for a handgun?" Other customer- "What difference does it make?" Oh, God, didn't he get a clue from my answer? As I was walking away, I heard those two jawboning about the difference between buying .22LR for a handgun vs. a rifle. Talk about pointless...:roll

I have actually had a Wal Mart clerk ask for my ID since I was making such a large purchase (around 500 rounds) as she wanted to know who she was selling that much ammo to... (I normally don't pull my badge for anything, that is not my style) but in this case I made an exception and said the police. I then called the manager and told him what she was doing and at 47, she was not wanting my ID for my age and what she was doing was wrong.... This was months before any of the hysteria..

That was an exceptional way to handle the situation, i can only hope the manager schooled the clerk.

I take my 3 boys shooting occasionally....those boxes of 550 .22 ammo last less than 2 hours! (along with many other rounds of various calibers)

What does a poor sap do, that can't "role the gold"?

Well you don't have to worry about that now, as they will only sell you 3 boxes (including 3 boxes of 350 rds/box Winchester .22LR). When they have it!

But if they did ask what you are buying it for, even though they shouldn't, why not simply say it's for the group meet at the Range on Saturday.

Great news. Maybe things are easing up a little.

Your boys are fortunate to have a Dad like you. They will remember those shoots all their lives.

Unfortunately, I went to a couple Wal-Mart's today and nary a .22 round to be found.

TheRealMacGyver 02-26-2013 02:56 PM

Why in the heck are they asking if it's for a handgun or rifle? And why would it matter anyhow? I use the same .22LR ammo in my handguns and rifles. What am I missing here?

I think all this hysteria will turn out to be for nothing. I don't get people hoarding the .22 LR. 5.56 maybe but not .22 LR.

As I understand, if the customer says "Yes, these are for a handgun", there are more steps in the transaction. I've only ever get this question at Walmart, so maybe it's just their corporate policy. I knew enough to say "no". When I bought 1600 rounds of Mini Mags from Palmetto State Armory, all they wanted was my credit card # and shipping address.

if they ask, the best answer is "none of your day-um business" since when do wal-mart employees of all people get to decide who buys what ammo??? ;?

Hollywood9s 02-26-2013 04:08 PM

I haven't seen 22 ammo in any of our local WalMarts for over 2 months. I call in all the time to check as well, and they are always out.

PMaine 02-26-2013 06:32 PM

Why the shortage of .22 LR?

When you can't find any other ammo, people tend to freak out (me included!). Heck, 12 gauge is even hard to find. Wait a minute....you haven't tried to buy ammo lately have you?

A Few Dollars 02-26-2013 07:17 PM

I would have bought both boxes and sold one to the guy for $15.

Handgun ammo is 21 or older. Rifle or shotgun ammo is 18 or older. Ammo that can be used for both is 21 or older I believe. Maybe she thought he was under 21 ;?.
