Default St. Thomas

I am thinking about planning a vacation to St. Thomas. It will be a large family vaction, probably about 8-10 people, with 2 of them being 2 and 3 years old. Kids travel really well and love the water and boating. Looking for some info from people who have been there. Where to stay, it doesn't have to be the highest dollar most expensive place, looking for good value, safe, good customer service, and clean. What is the best time of the year to go? And of course I will be fishing at least once, maybe twice. Brother and law and I will be looking to do at least one day of serious bill fishing. So just to recap....

1. Where to stay?
2. When to go?
3. What boat or boats to fish on?

I would suggest you take a good look at St John. It is a 20 minute ferry ride from St Thomas and is a great spot for a family vacation compared to St Thomas.

A good time to go is May, June or July. Off season rates are in place and the island is not as crowded. The weather does not vary, 82 to 86 with a breeze, from one month or season to the next.

With such a large group, you should consider renting a villa. You can find a large number of affordable island homes for rent on vrbo.com

Good luck and PM me if you have any specific questions.

Don't bother with St. Thomas...go to St. John. You can rent a house on St. John that can easily accommodate the number of people.
St. Thomas is dirty and not the safest place...

Recently got married on st Thomas on the beach on frenchmans cove. Had the reception, 10 people, at Havana blue and it was amazing. Me and the bride then went to St. John's for a day trip and some dinner at zozo's. that was by far the best night of the week. Make sure you call a few weeks in advance and ask for seats at the upstairs bar. You will not regret it.

I'm not a fan of St Thomas. I found it to be very busy and not very good customer service. St John was much more laid back and very pretty. St John is more expensive.

Went through ST on the way to the BVI back in 1994.
St Thomas was kinda bad then.
Had an old timer in Tortola tell me the USVI have discovered welfare and care less for the tourists than the BVI'ers. Course he was the latter.

Have you considered a cruise?

That's a large group to accommodate.

DO NOT STAY AT CARIB BEACH if you do end up on St Thomas.
I told that POS Manager years ago I would bad mouth him and that place forever because of his $h!t attitude and the way he treated people.
Yes it was years ago and is managed by some one else by now but it was not good.
In town, the taxi drivers, standing shoulder to shoulder, were relentless with EVERYONE of them asking if you need a cab.
Someone was shot at a phone booth. Heard it was drug related.
On a positive note, Megan's Bay was beautiful and we did take a day trip to St. John.

My parents, sister and I stayed at Frenchman's Reef on St. Thomas last august. I agree that St. John was much nicer but St. Thomas had more to do I think. We rented a car which was nice. St. Thomas has some sketchy areas but the resort and Red Hook were nice. Did a self tour of the island visited all the famous beaches, which were awesome. Snorkeing in St. John was outstanding. We fished on Marlin Prince and released one blue and lost another before heading in early cause it was rough as chit. Coral World was a blast, my sis and I did the SNUBA tour which was awesome. We had an awesome time overall and highly recommend either island.

There's a reason St. Thomas locks up at sunset.

I will never go back to St Thomas. While it is a absolutely beautiful island, the people there are the most unfriendly that I have ever met anywhere in the world. They were down right nasty. I guess they forget about the hands that feed them. Wife and I both said if thats how they are, we have many other choices.

Went to St. Thomas a couple times, and always had a good time. The people away from the tourist traps are plenty friendly if you treat them with respect. I personally like St. John as it's way more laid back, but there is not much to do on the island besides hike and beach/snorkel. Don't bother with any snorkeling tours as you can do it right from any beach. My wife liked St. Thomas better since there's a lot more going on...

X2 I went there last December and had the same feeling. St. John on the other hand is gorgeous. I would take a ferry over to Red Hook from St. John to charter a boat.

Its been a while since i've been there but was there two years in a row, got married there the second. We stayed at Point Pleasant resort both times. Quiet, private & secure. I think its on Water Bay? Had another resort next to it with private beach. A short walk was Coki beach which is public but very nice. I agree with others as far as dirty, crime etc. but most of that is in Charlotte Amalie. We went to the Kmart the first day the first year for groceries and about a 10 year old kid tried to sell me some geef, but other than that pretty begnign, actually the worst was the first year when a buddy got married. We almost got into a fight with the dutch navy over them trying to dance with the bride. Definitley hit St. John

Stayed at the Ritz on St. Thomas back in 2001 for a few days. We were at the tail end of a vacation where we spent the first week at the Bitter End YC on Virgin Gorda, and decided to do some shopping. It was okay, but not sure I'd go back. I have always heard St. John was much better.

Check this place out. http://www.vrbo.com/264710

As said before, from the airport to Red Hook is kinda sketchy. But there are some beautiful beaches and plenty to do close by Red Hook. We went over to St. John 3 times in our week there and we liked it, but its ALOT more hilly/cliffy, personally i would not feel comfortable driving there. At Saphhire you can walk up the driveway and catch a safari bus for about a buck that will take you to Red Hook to eat/drink/catch the ferry, circle you around the whole island for about 6 bucks, get off where you want and hop back on another one 4-5 mins later.

I personally loved being able to walk out on the beautiful beach and not have to pack up a jeep and go for a harrowing ride. Walk back to the room to get cold beers, get lunch etc. Sit on the balcony and watch the world go by. To each his own. Every caribbean island has its bad spots. Be smart and you will be safe. Theres a reason the islands are called a "Sunny place for shady people". Also google Capt John Brandi St John. Best thing we have ever done was spend a day with him.
