Default you are who??

Hanging out with with favorite tackle dealer, with old dude sitting on a folding chair. Nice guy, not a great fishing guy, but smart, personable, funny and mellow. About ten minutes into chatting about nothing in particular I asked him where he's from. The tackle guy says....
"This is Ray Price."

I say (intelligently) "Really?"

He smiles and laughs, says Yeah.

I am not a great old country guy, more an Austin City Limits thing, but Ray is a f***** legend!!

A very cool down to earth guy. I consider myself very lucky!

Years ago, I was having a Poboy in a restaurant in New Orleans. Random people kept walking by our row of booths, they would be either singing or humming what I thought was Fats Domino songs (I am a huge fan). This went on the entire time I was sitting at the booth. Finally, I ask one of the people walking by about it, he starts laughing and says.... Fats Domino is sitting behind you.

I was speechless. BTW, I LOVE Fats Domino!!

Funny you mention fat's I have talked with he & Mrs. Rose many times when I would deliver groceries to their house when I was a youngster. As much money as he had, he was never one to live exorbitantly.
As a matter of fact I see his nephew atleast once a week.

Sorry but....I have a hard time respecting anyone that asks prying questions like where are you from, what do you do for a living, how old are you, what do you drive, etc when you first meet them unless of course they are children or hot babe's that want to get into my pants. IMO questions of such nature tell me the person asking them have very poor social skills and is a person I would not invite into my home because of their roaming eyes and probably desire to look in everything.

But your little story is neat I guess.

true some of those questions are personal but it's still better than "What the f are you looking at old man?"

I love his music. I'm amazed at how he can just open his mouth and that beautiful voice just falls out with no effort at all. He likes to hang out here in cajun country with all the local music talent. His song Time is great, as well as most of his other. I'm sorry to hear that he has cancer.

Actually I don't think "where are you from? is a particularly rude question. I think you are kind of an asshole for saying so. I figure the Mods ban people for for good reason.

Glad some one clarified which Ray Price you were talking about. I only knew of one, and he's a legendary Harley dealer.

That's kind of a screwed-up way to be, Garett. People often ask those kind of questions to spur further conversation and find commonality, things they can talk about with you.

"So, where are you from?"
"I'm from Tempe, Arizona."
"Really!? I've always wanted to go to Arizona. Do you know where Casa Grande is? My wife's sister lives there."
"Sure, it's not too far from where I'm at blah...blah...blah."

Not everybody is a GREAT conversationalist, but most people will try to find some common ground in an attempt to be friendly!

I have a neat story too:

Back in the day, the people of the upper caste had their children go to finishing school to learn proper social etiquette. Not so much to gain good social skills, but to learn the "secret social code" so they could identify, belittle, and weed out the people with a "commoner's background". Today the term for those people with the secret social code is usually Elitist.

Garett:

It's a natural question for us Floridians, as EVERYONE is from somewhere else...........

Any place else, I'll agree with you.

In these parts we never ask "where are you from?" We usually just say, "you ain't from around here are ya?".
