Default Who besides Dell?

I am going to rant but will keep it short. Ordered 10 machines from Dell a few weeks ago and paid with company check. All went well. decided to get me a new one so I went the "Dell Financial/60 days same as cash" route. Credit approved, confirmation sent, machine was supposed to ship last Friday. Checked the order status today and it had been cancelled. Spoke to no less than 5 people and no one could explain it. I am pi$$ed and wish I could ship the 10 machines back but I guess that would be stupid.

As much as I like Dell I ain't buying from them. Who else makes a good desktop machine for office use?

You're not going to want to hear this but.....no body....... Dell is like Microsoft, got it cornered...... sounds like you had one of those hiccups, don't let it ruin the outlook........

I would give dell one more chance, I have tried gateway, which was moderately decent, as well as a few brand name retail computers, which were all junk. I quite literally got in numerous yelling matches with HP/Compaq due to lack of knowledge of their products on the tech support lines. they also seem to sub out a lot of their tech support phone lines overseas, I refuse to speak to someone that doesnt' speak fluent english in a dialect that I can understand over the phone. Im not saying there is anything wrong with people that speak english as a second language, but I dont' think that they should under any circumstances deal with customers on the phone where spoken language is the only way of communicating. The dell's aren't the least expensive by any means, and they do have an ocational problem, but hey, that's business, everything doesn't run completely smooth all the time. I have had them replace 2 entire systems due to repeat minor problems, and even send out a tech to swap out the hard drives so that there was no data loss, which is a pretty easy thing to do, but it takes time that I didn't have.

Yep, dell is about the best for desktops, just like HP is tops for servers.. Unfortunately, you gotta take the good with the bad.

I seem to get more computer for my money with HP. I have 2 HP desktops and 2 HP laptops in my house. I also have a Gateway, they also offer more bang for the buck. Dell was overpriced for the components it came with.
Alot of computers, but I have 3 daughters and my laptop is for my personal files.

Shag, Don't take it too hard. This is the first instance I've heard of, I'm sure it's not the only one, where Dell has made a mistake. They've been great for me. Try and use it to your advantage some how.

I sent them an e-mail and will say I received a prompt response. But, the response was that it wasn't their problem but Dell Financial. ???

I guess that's what I get for trying to float $1,200 for 60 days. I'll just use a credit card and order the damned thing. Just1more, I will take your advice and see if I can make em feel feel bad.

Me personally, I've never bought pre packaged PCs, I just don't see the logic in conforming around a computer. I am also not a fan of buying "adequate" components.....no single manufacture can supply you with a complete line of top of the line components (motherboard, graphics card, sound card, ram, modem, controllers, hard drives, power supplies). Why conform to something you buy, instead have it conform to your needs.

I currently am putting together a new system - serious graphic users and gamers take note:

(motherboard) - abit nf8-v
(processor) - amd 3.4 @ 64 bit
(ram) - 1 gig ddr 4000
(hard drives) - 2 @ western digital 8 meg, 74 gig, 10,000 rpm in (RAID 0) - possibly (RAID 0 + 1) with a
western digital 8 meg, 250 gig, 7,200 rpm
(graphics card) - 256 g force 5900
(sound card) - creative labs Audigy 5:1 or on board 6:1 setup ???
- * removalbe hard drive slot from front bay
- * DVD r/rw
- * CD player
- floppy drive w/card reader
- * altec lansing speakers
- * 19" samsung trilitron true flat
- * logitech cordless keyboard and mouse
- * battery backup protection

* means I will be bringing over from my old system

If there was one brand that I would not buy, well the would be compact. I just know of to many horror stories.

I have purchased about ten computers in the past five years. all have been for my home based business or kids in college. My experience has taught me that what's on the inside is what counts. Lets face it, a computer is just a hard drive, motherboard, CD Rom/DVD, power supply and software. If you get a name brand hard drive and motherboard it doesn't matter where it comes from unless you are so inexperienced you need to pay for the tech. support that comes with a big brand. I always buy my computers new off of E-Bay. There are several good companies that have storefronts on E-Bay and sell very good systems at half the cost as Dell. I even found a new Dell on Ebay and bought it for my son in college cheap. Stay away from HP/Compact except for printers.

I am responsible for maintaining about 425 computers in a college. All but two of the desktops are Gateways, with two Dells. The 45 laptops are about 2/3 Gateway and 1/3 Dell.I get far better customer support from Gateway, but need it far less often than I do from Dell...Brian

Shag,

I'm sure I'll be in the minority but IBM.

I've owned gateways and used HPs and Dells. I'm getting ready to buy another computer(tower) and it will be an IBM. Don't know if others do it but IBMs come with a recover disk that makes life very easy if you ever get a virus and the tactile feel of the keyboard is better. I also like Lotus.

Shag,

We used to buy Gateways here, then switch to COMPAQ, now HP/COMPAQ. We have over 500 desktops and 40 servers here. HP has been great to deal with. Of course, nothing beats our new IBM iSeries 520 mainframe.

Though I've always been happy with Dell PC's and Laptop's in the past, the problem with them is that you have to deal directly with them. No competition, no one to keep them honest other than changing brands.

I would not use Gateway for a business environment. Though I think they've improved, they still don't have the quality rep that the other companies have earned. I've used HP servers for years and have also switched over to HP for all my desktop for the past few years. I've been very happy with them. And unlike Dell, you can deal with a variety of resellers who are competing for your business.

FYI, for what it's worth, HP has yet to earn a good reputation in the laptop environment. I would use IBM, Dell and Toshiba in that order for laptops.

Thanks for all the imput guys. Took off yesterday, rode up the mountain, had a good meal and a few drinks, spent the nite and I'm OK now.

We just donated 8 Acers after replacing with Dell. Come to think of it we rarely had a problem with them. Any pro's or con's on Acer?

I bought a Spartan laptop a few months ago and thought to myself "Hey, I'll just get one of their desktops" but in looking at their web site it looks like they are a laptop manufacturer that will turn one up on its side and call it a desktop.

I am probably biting my nose off to spite my face and may still get the Dell but it still pi$$e$ me off.

Thanks again.

We buy a few IMB laptops each year and never had a problem . . . local guy is great to deal with . . . our associates have had problems with HP because it takes forever to get little problems resolved e.g. new PC and takes 6 days to replace defective battery . . . Dell short ships order and refuses to provide second hard drive and extra memory PS New 23 inch flat screen is fantastic . . . can display two full pages of text when word processing . . . and see very large speadsheets . . . unbelievable
