Default 1 million CCW permits

http://staugustine.com/florida-news/...d-gun-licenses

Good news, florida has issued 1 million CCW permits. Tcontic and others can rest easy...

so many permit holders, so little in the way of improper actions

TALLAHASSEE — Florida will be the first state to have issued 1 million permits allowing people to carry concealed firearms, said Adam Putnam, Florida’s commissioner of agriculture and consumer affairs.

Florida had issued 993,200 active permits as of Nov. 30, according to state data. Of those, 875,600 were for state residents, accounting for 4.6 percent of its 19.1 million population. The state will pass the 1 million mark next week, Putnam said at a news conference Wednesday in Tallahassee.

Florida was among the first states in 1987 to require approval of concealed-carry licenses for any applicant who meets certain criteria, instead of giving local police discretion over those decisions. Today, 38 states have “shall issue” laws similar to Florida’s, according to the National Rifle Association, a firearms-rights group based in Fairfax, Va.

Florida, the fourth most populous state, had 887,000 active permits as of Dec. 31, 2011, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Pennsylvania had the second-most with 786,000.

In Florida, permits are issued to anyone who, among other things, is at least 21 and has never been convicted of a felony crime.

Very cool! We still need to get a description of Tcontic so we all know not to help him if he is in trouble. After all, that was his request.

1 million? Wow- that's 3-4 times as many as we have up here. About 2.5% of Michigan's population is licensed. At the rate our city police are being laid off due to budget problems, I'm expecting the numbers of licenses to grow more quickly.

Yet another reason I'll never set foot in Florida again.
Let the shooting begin!

You might wanna stay away from AZ, too. We don't even need a permit to carry concealed anymore so you have NO idea how many, who, etc.

I'm not against guns, in fact I shoot skeet and trap with my sons.

What I'm concerned about is the proliferation of concealed handguns into the hands of minimally trained individuals. Scares the crap out of me to think some CCW permit holder is going to come to my rescue, just as likely to get shot by them as the perceived perpetrator.

Fair enought point of view. Given the choice - assuming you have something bad happening to you... lets say you and your boys are in a parking lot getting mugged... would you rather have someone there with a gun (aside from the mugger) and take your chances - or would your preference be to let things play out with the mugger.

Personally - I would much rather take my chances that the CWP holder has taken the time to train with his CCW. Again though - just my thoughts on it.

I always shudder with broad brush assumptions - no matter the subject. Personally, I carry. Most people I know carry. Those people, myself included - train with our guns. I have more than 10K rounds through my carry gun - both at traditional ranges - as well as instructed courses. Those courses cover everything from low light to firing under stress. I feel like I'm pretty well versed. Based on my experience - I would also say that those that I know who carry - are quite proficient with their CCW's as well.

I'm far more concerned with the people that are issued drivers licenses than Carry permits.

I commend you on your dedication to training and preparedness, this level should be mandatory in my opinion.

Do you think the other 999,999 CCW permits holders in Florida are as well trained as yourself or your buddies? Would you trust the majority of those with your life?
