A routine call for me; e.g. clean and inspect the furnace yearly, is $85.00. He can always go up!

A lady called a plumber for a drain problem. When he was done he handed her a bill for $150. She said "$150 for an hour's work? My doctor doesn't charge that much". He replied, "I know, I used to be a doctor".

A good ol' boy plumber came to one of the apartments in order to unclog a drain. Turned into a 5 hour deal with me helping him. He charged $650 for that job and I'm not planning on using him again.

360 and some change about six months ago. It was well worth it as we tried to unclog it ourselves with no luck. The kicker, the plumber the shop sent couldn't do it without some special tool he needed and wanted me to pay for it. "Let me get this straight. You want me to buy this tool for you to do this job?"
"yeah"
"What are you going to do with the hose after?"
"We are going to keep it and reuse it."
"No you're not. If I buy the hose, i'm keeping it and you can rent it from me next time you need it."
"Let me call my boss"

15 minutes later a supervisor comes out and checks to see what needs to be done, the two of them works together and in 30 minutes they unclog the pipe. I tell the super what was going on and that I didn't appreciate having to buy a tool for them to do their job. If it was a one time use tool, ok, I understand. But, don't make me buy a tool for you to do your job. Good job, but this experience left a shitty taste in my mouth. Pun intended.

Should be anywhere from 95-150 to clear a main line stoppage within an hour from a ground level cleanout. Anymore your getting screwed.

Stay away from roto-rooter etc big names.. find a mom and pop shop with a good reputation.

...and you're in Miami. We're in the sticks, so using your metro rates, 5 hours is $375 + $125=$500. $650 with me helping and coaching him is out of touch, especially since he was ready to give up after 30 minutes because he couldn't unclog it quickly...but wanted to charge $175 to that point.

I guess this dude likes to do a lot of small jobs and collect his $125 each time, eh?

I just had a clogged sink last week. Tried everything to unclog it. Ended up cutting a 15 ft section of PVC out and replacing it myself with rubber couplings on either side for about $30. It was really gross but it was easy to cut the pipe and replace it, and saved me a boat load of money. Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of 15' of solid clogged pvc...

75 ft is a lot of pipe though........

I just paid 150.00 for the exact same thing that covered the service call and first hour and half anything after that would have been 125.00 per hour.

Plumbing is such a shitty job. I mean would you clear a turd for free for someone you don't know??.
I'll stick to HVAC.
