If I were looking today, I'd see what was available in a 2-3-yr.old Nissan Altima or Toyota Camrey - well-built cars that are KNOWN for their dependability, and have a little "size" to them!

One of the local Nissan dealers has a SECOND sticker on ALL of their new cars - one added by THEM, next to the MSRP sticker.

They were/are adding $1,985 or so to EVERY Nissan on the lot - little ones and big ones and sporty ones!!!!!!!!!!!! That's about 15% or so ADDITIONAL on a "Sentra" or similar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The sticker says "ADDITIONAL MARKET VALUE"! What a CROCK - do they think we are STUPID, MONEY VS. BRAINS, or that they have the ONLY decent car out there???

Here's a good site to look at for "used" (mostly 1-3 years old) - pics, specs, and ALL!

My wife had a 1994, 3000GT(Mitsubishi)she drove for 172,000 miles without
major incident. When she sold it, the bearing on the input shaft for the tranny
was starting to make noise.
This wasn't the high end model, she only paid 25k new. It didn't have the turbo's.
The only other car she owned that held up this well were a pair of old festiva's that she bought for work cars(little pieces of #$%@# ran like eveready bunnies).
It had a factory 8 disc changer in the trunk(back).
Her best time from Illinois to Pcola was about 11.25 hrs.. It had a 25(gal) tank.
The only thing she didn't like about it was that it was to showy for her for every day.
If you can find one of these that someone bought new and took care of it would be worth the look.
The mileage was close to 24 on the highway.

Mazda 3
Wife has a 4 door model. It is a 2.3 liter S model I think. If you go easy on the equipment you can get a new one for under $18,000. Mazda will not move much on the price because there isn't that much mark up and the car is sporty, relatively economical, an are red hot on sales. This thing is a blast to drive. It's not my 65' GTO but it handles a lot better and better gas mileage etc etc.
Have fun looking ...... Also you can't go wrong with a Toyota Camry or any Toyota for that matter! The only draw back to Toyota is they are very Vanila or should I say "plane jane" not much sporty about a Camry.

Used Nissan Maxima SE. Probably the best combination of reasonable price, sportiness, and likelihood of finding one that is reasonably new and has not been run too hard.

Stretch the budget slightly and go for a lower-end Mustang.

Nissan Altima.

Hi Jacobi,

We had an Infinity I30. It is basically an upgraded Maximum under an Infinity badge, with lots of sound deadening material etc. For some reason they tend to depreciate faster than Lexus or Acura as the Infinity branding was not as strong.

If you can find one used, they are AMAZING cars. If you research them on-line you will see that they consistently rank as one of the most reliable + their users vote on them as a top vehicle.

It has an amazing engine and a great stereo, which you said were important. It is not quite a sports car as it has four doors, but it is really peppy and fun to drive.

Cheers. Peter

I am a but American if possible person.

Unfortunately there ain't much sporty in that range that I could recommend.

With incentives and discounts you can get an Impala for that which is a very safe and relaible car that'll go a couple hundred thousand miles. I have tried other newer models but can't fit comfortably into anything else.

Porbably good advice above - especially the Nissan line-up.

Many of the Japanese models are made in USA and have considerable USA content.

As previously stated you can't go wrong with a Camry, Accord, or Altima.

I just bought a '01 Volvo S60, inline 5 cylinder, 2.4L turbo. So far I love this car. Much sportier than the older boxy Volvos and the interior is very comfortable. Very fun to drive. You could likely find one 3-4yr old) close to your price range. It's basically a small-mid sized 4dr sports sedan. Around 23mpg city, 30 hwy.

I also looked at 2-3yr old Acura TL's. I was surprised how much more I liked the Volvo.

do youself a favor and go testdrive a maxima with a 5 speed, last body style, not the newest one, they are absolutely sweet. have a decent size back seat, and decent trunk room, and tons of power. absolutely a blast to drive, and get pretty good milage to boot. should be able to find one for around 16k with good options on it.

I would buy a YUGO for $500, put a $300 stereo (C'mon now, it's gotta have good sound) and then put the $17k saved as a down-payment on my next boat!

i like the newer 4 door hatchbacks that are made by toyota i think....

i like the 4 door hatchback that is made by scion as well (isn't scion made by toyota??)

i priced a scion online from their website and you can get one brand new, fairly loaded for around 16,500

i have an aunt who buys a new honda accord like clockwork every 10 years....when she got her new one in 03', i got her old one. it was the 10 year anniversary edition with around 80k miles....garage kept, washed and waxed monthly, and meticulously maintained...i lucked out.

i've put about 45k on it in the past two years, and we'll probably be getting something else in another two years or so....i look around on the internet when i get bored....if i had to buy something right now, it would be one of those 4 door hatchbacks....or a hybrid.

then again, my first priority is buying something economical....our current gas prices (2/gallon) may be considered low this time next year - scary i'll never buy another car unless it gets at least 30 mpg....preferably more.
