Default Making it easier for redlight cameras in FL

This is a great idea. I don't know why they didn't do it sooner. While they are at it they should ban those cute license plate covers red light runners use to try and evade the law.

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida could soon be getting new license plates.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, state officials want to replace the familiar green and white plates with a plate that's easier read. They say the switch would save the state money, in part because the more visible design would help law enforcement agencies identify drivers who don't pay tolls.
Almost one in six digital images is declared unreadable at toll booths by for the Florida Turnpike Enterprise, according to the Times. Combined with other problems across the state, taxpayers lose at least $7 million a year.
The emergence of red-light cameras in many communities has heightened the need for a more readable plate.
The new tag, which has already been designed, would be flat, with seven bold black letters and numbers defined by a white background. County names will be replaced with the words "Sunshine State" or the state motto, "In God We Trust," on standard tags.

Doesn't a yellow light mean drive like hell, it's about to turn red??

Y'all can have the cameras. AZ went this route and they were everywhere, even lining our freeways to issue speeding tickets. Guess what? They are all but virtually gone now with no notable changes in traffic safety.

People hated them. And the cities found that, once installed and drivers were aware of them, the revenue produced "in the name of safety" all but dried up and they were left holding the bag to pay Redflex and other traffic cameras companies the balance due on the contracts. My own city, Tempe, was over $300,000 a year upside down on the contract when they said that's enough of that and the cameras were shut down.

They are but a thing of the past here now. I couldn't be happier because the real bottom line? They were all about generating revenue, not safety.

Good luck with that, y'all!

As is is now, Florida has around 50 different license plates...........are they going to get rid of them all (and the extra $$ they get from them) and have just one plate.
I'm thinking NOT.

Why not just chip them and make the red light and speed zone devices capable of reading the chips while taking pics?

Just worked in Fl. several months and would like to know how in the heck does a person know on certain toll roads you have unmanned booths. Plus how do you pay if it is .50 and you only have bills. That one is in Lakeland.
Other Toll roads around Tampa have no booths. To me if you have a toll road and expect out of state drivers to obide you should have manned booths. I pay when I know when and what to pay.

There are more rear end collisions now with those camera enforced red lights. People are slamming on their brakes.

The red light camera's are horrible. I have gotten two tickets in the last 6 months with them. Only problem is I did not run the light. I made a right hand turn. The police are supposed to review the video and the demand letters. I think that is BS. They know if it is taken to court a right hand turn gets dismissed but they send the letter requesting payment anyway because most peopel will pay so they get no points on their license. What a scam. It is like legalized extortion. I had to waste about 4 hours for each ticket I took to court that got dismissed.

The new Escort Radar detector has a GPS chip in it that lets you know where speed & RL cameras are located. Database can be updated as new sites are added

You can also update your Garmin GPS (probably others) with a file that identifies where the cameras are located

WAZE also, but drivers must report them to help put them into the database.

Better than the t-bone intersections when they run them at speed.

When some people get used to the concept of actually having to stop for red lights traffic will adjust.

Does this make it easier to know where you can continue to run red lights?

Why do you care?

Did you NOT read the bold emphasis in my post with our decision here to get rid of the damned cameras? Here, once again...

They are all but virtually gone now with no notable changes in traffic safety.

There were no notable changes with them in place and operating, either. You work for Redflex or something or make money somehow from the stupid cameras?

An idiot that's going to run a redlight is going to do it whether or not a camera is there to take a picture. Your advocacy of the cameras doesn't change that fact one silly iota.

Actually they are working quite well around here and I have no connection to anyone in the traffic camera or enforcement business. I just don't like having to stop and wait after the light turns green for the inevitable red light runners hat then blow through the intersection.

Ok with me if every intersection had them.

Do you feel entitled to run red lights?

If not what is the problem?

If I were in a tank and you were the target, I might have to answer 'yes'.

The only thing I feel entitled to is keeping my hard-earned dollars in my wallet and not handing them over to local government because some bullshit camera said I was .0025 seconds too slow making it through an intersection. You just have a great life with Big Brother watchin' ya, k? Bye!!

On edit: The solution to solving red light running and your oh so huge inconvenience of having to wait a second when the light turns green is NOT cameras. It's four-way 3 second red lights. Read up on it. Solves the problem quite nicely.

.oo25 secs or 2 secs . Red light is a red light. Just be prepared to stop.

Yes. The human race. Where real people, not machines, make decisions about what is right and what is wrong.
