Default Police threaten to charge me....updated a little

I own a gas station convenience store. A few days ago a customer paid for gas and forgot to pump it. It seems that another customer came after him, about 20 minutes after and pumped his gas by mistake. The first customer came back demanding I give him money since he didn;t get the gas. I told him I wasn't showing any "extra" money and I wasn't about to hand over cash. He gets pissy and goes to police. An officer then came to my store and told me that I could be charged since he didn;t get what he paid for. Seems crazy to me that some idiot could forget to pump gas and I need to hand over money and be out the gas and money. Sorry Rant over...

He'll have one hell of a time proving he really didn't pump the gas into his own car......surveillance tapes available....????

I'd tell the officer to charge me. Somebody came in and paid for gas, then somebody pumped gas. End of story.

seems like a story of finders keepers, losers weepers. First guy owns gas and forgets it, seconds guy finds free gas and keeps it. Nothing to do with the gas station owner at all. Tough luck for the guy with his mind in the clouds, life aint fair.

Tapes and times. If you have cameras along with the newer POS system you would have no trouble proving your right. If not, your word against his.

As far as not getting something he paid for and then left and then came back, I would have to think that, would be a 100% civil matter, might vary state to state.

If I didn't have the tapes to prove it, I would probably pay the guy after a little bit of investigation, how much gas is in his tank when he is claiming he didn't pump it? Sizing the customer up, what type of person, etc.

Sometimes easier to cut a loss and aggravation before it happens to snowball???? All IMHO.

I spilled some gas on my shirt sleeve once, quite a bit of it because I was not paying attention.

The second stupid thing I did was light a cigarette as I was pulling out the gas station. The match I used of course snapped at just as I lit it and up my arm went in flames.

I quickly put my arm out of the window in the hopes that the wind would put the flame out.

Then I saw the blue lights, I pulled over and was arrested. What a day!

So, the second person pumped gas and took off? If I pump gas from a gas pump that is on, I don't just take off, is that what the second guy did? Did you see him do this?

Tell the first guy to see the second for his money.

I hope you didn't waste any money playing lotto that day.

Common sense would lead anyone to think you are not responsible for the actual disbursement of the gas.
Self service also incudes the implied contract of they pay ...they are responsible for pumping.

The same as if someone ordered a meal in a restaurant..went to the bathroom and someone else ate it...the restaurant owner is not responsible.

Ok Mr Cop. You haven't heard of this scam? The first guy pays and pulls off while his friend pulls in behind him and fills up. Now the first guy comes in and demands money. Then they go to the next gas station and pull the same thing.

So Mr. Officer, are these friends of yours? Are you helping them pull this scam?

No way they can charge you...The second driver is who took the gas. That is not your fault AMD not your job to be sure the guy pumps his gas...

The burdon of proff is on the guy that paid for the gas. I wouldn't turn over any tapes unless the courts asked for them. And also they'd have been recored over in 30 days anyway. The guy needs to go pound salt for his stupidity.

I was thinking the same thing, they could be in cahoots and pulling this scam all over town. I would call the guy's bluff and call the cops myself.

You're either a criminal or a lawyer. Either way... I love the way you think!

Are you sure it was a real cop, too? I'd call the station.
