Default 8.1 Crusader Engine

Intrested in any "dockside Chat" regarding the 8.1 Crusader Engines. I did the internet route but would prefer to hear some real hands on info.

Thanks

I've got twin 8.1's 385 hp apiece. I've only had the boat since the middle of last sept and put about 25 hrs on her before putting her up for the winter. I am extremely impressed with the torque of these motors and the quickness at which they jump my boat, at around 24000lbs loaded, on plane. I easily cruise 24knts@3500 and 25gallons/hr. Her top end is just shy of 32knts@4500rpm's.

Hey KeithS. Just curious how your 8.1's are doing. Any problems, suggestions, recommendations, etc., would be deeply appreciated. Reason: having them reinstalled on my boat (I am told that there is a problem with the initial trans gea ratio i.e., couldn't get up on plane during the sea trail.)

No kidding? So far so good on mine, although the performance has dropped a tad. I'm now running at around 23-24kts at 3500rpm and burning at a rate of close to 30g/hr. Come to find out there is a bit of difference from fresh to salt water, my previous numbers were from running in the river. But I'm still planning on having the props tuned this winter. I'm running straight inboards thru Hurst trannies, don't know the gear ratio but can look it up if you want. I'm still very pleased at the power of these motors and feel that they are a good match for my boat. The number of people on the silverton site that I belong to are running about the same and with only one complaint so far and that's about him not getting the top rpm's that he should be getting. I have heard of a couple of people who's engines shut down for no apparent reason and come to find out they were outfitted with the wrong fuel relay. I highly recomend them. What size boat are you running?
