Default Women's accelerator stuck going 119 MPH- Video

The dash cam footage of a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer.......

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/08/27/p...tor-run-w-vid/

Lucky everyone was OK.

On a side note, listed to what the reporter says at 1:35 about staying to the right. If only drivers obeyed that law in every day driving.

I saw this. I just don't get it? Something is wrong with this story.

this happened to me a couple of years ago, It wasn't even a big enough event to tell members of my family, not to mention the rest of the world.

Accelerator pinned and stuck to the floor as I go up a hill. If I let it go on, I would have been doing 100 too, but it simply was not that tricky to deal with. I burnt a brake up a little, shifted to neutral, lined up straight with the shoulder and turned the car off.. No big deal. Kept my hand on the key in case I needed to steer.

Everything is such a drama anymore.

The new cars don't have throttle cables anymore! All electronic control. Is this a dumb idea or what? Some truck sweeps by and keys the mic on his thousand watt CB and your electronic throttle goes haywire! Genius!

Btw. I don't know if this is actually what happened in this case.

read the article.....

"Ulvestad's Sorento was equipped with a keyless, pushbutton starter that she was unable to turn off, and according to the phone recording with a 911 operator, she was also unable to get the car to decelerate or shift the vehicle into neutral"

I am guilty of not reading past the headlines as well.

My guess is 9 out of 10 people would quickly figure out a way to stop - sounds like all she had to do was pullup the pedal and brake hard. That being said, this still should never happen.

Fly by wire took some time to get straight for planes. You would htink the brakes, accellerator and shift would all be mechanical or at least mechanical back-op???

On some cars turning the key off could disable and lock steering especially if you turn it to far...I htink - I always thought shift to neutral was the recommended action till I read the following

YIKES! So the shifting is also totally electronic or has some kind of lock out preventing it? That's SCARY!!!! That at the very least should be a direct mechanical link! I am hoping it was just a problem with her car or she didn't know how to do it..... I am going to be on th elook out for this if I ever buy a car again...

Any kia experts here - is there a lock out to prevent you from going to neutral or did she make this up for some publicity and some $$$$ settlement or to cover her embarassment? The more I think about this I just find it hard to believe that any car won't go to neutral when you shift it there - can anyone verify that this can happen?

It's bs..a combination of problems. She pulled up on the accelerator and it slowed down..obviously something (floormat?) was pushing it down.

Besides, it couldn't go 119 mph unless the tires were speed rated for that speed.

How the heck you could come to that conclusion is beyond me. Most folks in this Country are too stupid to even believe they have a socialist in the white house for goodness sake.

Oh yeah.....I forgot, your one of them!

My bad!

Like the kill lanyard on a boat, there should be some kind of emergency kill switch somewhere.
Something that shuts everything down except the steering.

Even if it had a conventional key switch on the column I would think 9 out of 10 women would turn the key to far and lock the steering.

The problem is most people are just plain stupid. The more we try to fix stupid, the more you enable stupid people to spend their entire lives as albatrosses of ignorance, blindly performing senseless acts of stupidity on a regular basis, and then crying victim when something happens.

If you cannot figure out how to put your car in neutral or stomp on the brake, you shouldn't be driving.

Very very few cars have enough horsepower to overpower the brakes. And IF I had a stuck accelerator and IF I couldn't pull it up and IF the transmission was somehow defective, preventing me from shifting to neutral and IF I couldn't figure out how to turn it off I'd probably throw the key fob out the window and see if the car shut off once it was out of range.

Or just stomp on the brakes with both feet until the vehicle stopped.

Cars are safer than ever now. They'll issue a recall for a defective windshield wiper motor that might fail and leave you with a rainy windshield impairing your vision. I'm pretty sure if a transmission existed that didn't let you forcefully go into neutral, it would never make it into a car today. And even push button start cars still have a way to be shut off, otherwise your car would be running 24 hrs a day, plus I'm sure they have overrides that the driver probably never bothered to learn.

There you go again, infusing politics into everything - even things that have absolutely nothing to do with politics. . The only difference between an extremist right-wing nut and a moon-bat fringe lefty, is the righty is a fundemantally bad person who takes delight in others suffering.

Better to be closer to the middle, and be capable of thinking for yourself, Imho...

Btw, you never answered my question... Did you support that Norwegian fellow rightwing extremist's murder of those 80 "libtard" kids on that island camp? This "brother" of yours did this in support of your shared extremist beliefs... A kindred spirit of yours and hero, right? Did you recognize the special righty salute he gave after he was convicted? Assuming you had the same grin on your face, as he did.

I'm not ready to throw this woman under the bus quite yet. Do you think she was on the phone with 911 and they said to shift to N and she didn't know how? Or push the on/off button?

Right - you can take most modern day automatic cars on the highway going 55 and take the lever and put it into 1st or reverse or anything the computer doesn't think is right and it will not shift to that gear. So a computer glitch/failure could cause her not to be able to shift out of D.

I am leaning to thinking that it could be a floor mat, however I don't have any more information than you do so its just a guess.
