I love the Iowa Class. I always felt we should have at least one Battleship active or mothballed.

Realistically we all know that the carrier has become the symbol of US strength abroad and is feared the most but it does not take away my love for the BB.

I agree - but you know they are things of the past..... Firing a low tech gun just isnt the way of the future... But it would be nice to keep one in service as a showpiece ....

The only thing intimidating about Ranger was that she caught on fire every few hours ---- old girl -- old electrical systems - nothing more scary than a class "D" fire.....

Fire, fire, fire.....

Battleships were beautiful proud ships but basically obsolete by 1941. Perhaps one could be kept alongside the USS Constitution as a museum piece.

The USS Missouri was used to hit targets on land using her 16" guns in 1991 during desert storm. Artillery never goes out of style! The targeting radar and ballistic computer could put a 16" shell within 100' of it's target at 20mi.

I remember they used UAV's to spot during Desert Storm when they send the first couple of 16" rounds out...the Iraqi soldiers knew that when the drone was above them, the incoming wasn't far out...they often surrendered to drones.
My father was on the beach at Anzio in Italy during WWII...the Germans used Krupp 11.1" railroad guns to shell the ships anchored up offshore. He told me one of the most terrifying experiences was the sound of those shells passing overhead towards the ships. Talk about shock and awe...

Harpoon is way better than a gun:

That or a drone with Hellfire missiles.

Battleships are romantic but a waste of money in today's military that could be better spent on modern weapons. No room for sentimental favorites.

Pearl Harbor proved that battleships were obsolete. Sitting ducks against an aerial attack from carrier based aircraft.

They were vulnerable because they were bottled up in a harbor....

That said, I agree - they are basically obsolete.......

Point is the US Fleet was vulnerable to an air attack.

The Japanese would not have been successful if they had deployed their battle ships and heavy cruisers against Pearl Harbor instead of their carriers.

and the US Fleet would not had been decimated if the ships were at sea instead of stuck in a small harbor....

We should have been at sea and on alert..... We were asleep at the wheel....

Then why is the US Navy designing an electromagnetic rail gun to mount on ships?
