Default Brass Antiques

My wife inherited a box full of old brass stuff. Some of it is pretty cool. There is a coal iron, a very large mortar & pestle, candlesticks, a tray with incense burners from India and more. The solid pieces are surprisingly heavy. Her parents did a lot of traveling and accumulated this stuff over the years. Below is a pic of some of it.

2 questions:

1. What is the best stuff to use to clean it up.

2. Anyone know about this stuff?

Used to use nev-r-dull for brass. No advice on value though.

I'm really not into the brass look, but the little coal iron is pretty cool and the mortar and pestle is cool just because of the weight. I looked on Ebay and there isn't much money in it. I may clean it up just to see if there are any markings. There is a platter in the box with a manufacturer name and it's worth about $100 on Ebay. Now I need to convince my wife to sell it all and buy more fishing gear!

I have a big brass ships masthead light, almost 2 feet high and 16 inches wide, and we were able to get a good price on it because somebody tried to clean it up..... I've soaked it in in a garbage can with about 5% vinegar trying to regain some of the original patina. It's better but still shows some of the cleaning attempts. You should probably wait to define value before you attempt to clean them, you could likely reduce their value.
