Default Dear Prudence : Help me find friends

So like the title says, I was wondering how to make some friends. I have a lot of good friends, but the wife and I are wondering how to make some traveling friends. We are both 35 y/o DINKS that have a great group of friends here in TX. We have a 35' flybridge SF that we enjoy fishing and cruising. We both still work jobs but have 30 + vacation days each year and have flexible schedules. Our friends are really cool and we love taking short trips with them but they do not have the freedom/flexibility we do to take longer and or more expensive trips. It would be great if we could find some other people that could afford to travel with us. We typically stay at inexpensive places but it is still expensive for some of our best friends to go with us to Costa Rica, BVI's, etc... Any ideas on finding another couple that would be our age who are able to travel/vacation alot?

I think if you are upfront with them, and make it clear that you will not kill them and eat them, you will eliminate a ton if confusion.

Seriously, go travel to these sport on our own, and see who else is there. great way to meet like minded and tender people

Friends are overrated. Before you know it you have to call them on the phone and then you get invited over for drinks, and if that isn't bad enough, you'll end up having dinner together.

Life is short. Enjoy your time with your wife. No time for anyone else that will suck the life clock from your existence.

now, Mike, if your wife has dozens of friends and is the social center of the universe around town, then you and I have a lot in common

Not much of a traveller or socializer but I suggest you keep travelling and you will find others like you. Or enlarge your ativities locally - maybe clubs or other social functions and you will eventually meet like minded folks.

I actually have the opposite problem - my wife is a traveller as are our few shared friends - so she goes with them and I stay here with my family and male friends.

There are activities specificallly attractive to DINKS - competitive dancing comes to mind, artsy stuff and actually so does yachting - maybe you need to move to a new Marina?

Look into the local Power Squadrons chapter in your area. Here is a link for the ones in TX. Also look into the America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association (AGLCA)TM.

It is hard. We are 38- 40 and DINKS also. We have a lot of friends but most just cant afford to go on trips or they have issues with their kids....we have a couple of people that can swing it but most just cant afford it....Even my "guy" trip crew has shrunk.... our ski trips used to be 7+ days 10 guys now we are hard pressed to get 4..... Island trip / Fishing... as soon as you mention $1000+ in gas it just drops even more.....

Take your existing friends just pay for stuff for them.

"Hey, I won 150 gallons of gas from XYZ Marine. Anyone want to come with me and burn through it? I'm going the week of blah to blah and using my points to get rooms at the hotel there."

My friends, who have been my friends for a very long time, have benefited from all kinds of cool stuff over the years. Now I just straight up ask them if they want to tag along.

Thanks for the replies. When we went to the bvis the last time we were on a boat with a couple that we had never met before. They were nice but had kids and normally did not travel. We just had a great boat trip with a set of friends that we really enjoy and my wife commented how it would be great if they could travel with us more. Unfortunately their work commitments don't allow them to roll with us too often so I figured I'd pose the question to the tht braintrust. I'll post a pic when I get back to mah computer...
