Default Here is trick for giving dogs medications

We have always had a hard time getting a dog to take a pill when needed, not that often but we have tried every trick in the book

We have 3 dogs in our house(1 is my parents dog that after my Dad passed away my Mom moved in with my Sister and we ended up keeping Pop's Maggie(love her to death). Anyway one of our dogs, Maltese, had developed some time of skin rash that got infected and Vet put her on some strong antibiotics which I have to give her 2 times each day and one every other day.

We had tried wrapping in cheese, meat and she would end up eating the "snack" but spitting out the pill some way. Well Admiral's best friend told us to get peanut butter and put the pill in a little dab of that

Works GREAT, only thing is I have to give other two dogs a bite of peanut butter to make sure they are not being left out

She was telling us that it sticks to the roof of the mouth and they ignore the pill while worrying about rest of the peanut butter

So if you have a dog that needs at any time to take some medication this works great

My dog got into a scrap and suffered a bite wound to the foreleg, presently on antibiotic pills. Dog would spit the pill out no matter what we tried till my wife found on line useing both processed cheese and peanutbutter. Spread some peanutbutter on a bite size piece of cheese and wrap the pill up in the center of it, the dog can't woof it down fast enough! Cone of shame and wrap the wound in a warm compress for 10 minutes 3 times a day but the dog wouldn't sit still for it, after a week the wound was still red & swollen, back to the vet, you HAVE to warm compress the wound, day 3 of the warm compress and big diffrence, swelling way down and wound healling well. Dope for not following the Vet's directions.

Try Pill Pockets. They make them for tablets and capsules. I was in Rat Terrier rescue and never had a dog turn them down.

this will work w/ all dogs except ones that bite ha ha use left hand to grab top of snout have pill in right hand between middle finger and thumb. tilt dogs head so u can see back of throat use four finger of left hand to push down on lower jaw at the same time, put right index in roof of mouth, put pinky on lower canine to help open mouth. the pill is between thumb and middle finger and is now in the middle of dogs mouth just drop the pill once it has done past half way on the tongue, the tongue will pull it down the throat. this is free and works 90% of the time the key is the right hand index and pinky you will find the right spot in time. speed is the only issue the more time you spend with hand in mouth the more uncomfortable dog may get. let me know how it works for you.

Any advice on how to put drops in a un-cooperative German Shepherd's eyes?

With regards to the cheese option, what I do is nuke it in the micro for 10 seconds and it goes all gooey. Then wrap the pill in the hot cheese. Let it cool for a minute.

The pill is totally encased in cheese and my dogs don't even hesitate. Down it goes.

If I nuke some cheese now they both sit tails wagging in anticipation of the "treat". Now, that's some good (very accidental) training!

For Holly, she gets a pill twice a day. We stick it in a small piece of hot dog just enough to cover the pill. She swallows it right away.

She's no dummy. That would work twice - first and last!

If you are easily amused (i am) put a glob of the peanut butter on top of the dog's nose
then stand back and let hilarity ensue

Only way our dog will take it, is stuffing it down to the beginning of the throst and shut it's mouth until she swallows it. It's a good thing she's a good dog, because she is way too big to get bitten by.

Okay, I just did that to our dog and the neighbors dog, who happened to be visiting. Not quite as funny as wrapping aluminum foil around a cats paws with rubber bands.

I had my dog on pills for a year or so and did the Peanut butter trick.

Took the dog to the vet and his teeth were starting to rot out. I had to pay to have his teeth cleaned and two were pulled.
Vet told me I was feeding the dog too much sugar. The sugar was from the pb.

He sold me a toothbrush and toothpaste for the dog. I brushed his teeth twice a day after each pill. Teeth are looking good.

This is exactly how to give a dog meds, my vet did it and showed me. It took literally two seconds to give the dog a pill. A dog cant swallow with his mouth closed without sticking his tongue out the end.

Use Teddie unsalted all natural peanut butter, the only ingredient is roasted peanuts.

I have four dogs. They've figured out all the 'pill wrapped in snacks' trick. Grab their bottom jaw. They'll open their mouth wide. Put pill in mouth, then hold mouth shut. Takes five seconds, and they have no choice but to swallow the pill. Then I give them a Pupperoni. They're happy.
