Default Okay.. What actually is a Spammer?

There seems to be a lot of spammer talk lately in here. What does that actually mean, and why is it done? Sorry, for the dumb question, but if I don't ask......

According to the Internet Society and other sources, the term spam is derived from the 1970 Spam sketch of the BBC television comedy series monty Python's Flying Circus.

Any kind of advertising in the form of someone signing up as a member and posting the same ad on multiple threads (or even just one thread) then leaving never to come back and be a part of the forum discussions.

Spam takes many forms. There's the direct, in-your-face approach - HEY! BUY MY GREAT LURES!!! And then lately, there's this soft approach where the spammer will write a story about what great fish they caught, boat they were on, whatever, and simply embed a link to a website for said product.

As an Admin on another forum, "spambots" (programs that automatically seek out forums, then automatically register and begin posting threads or just answering posts with embedded links to porn sites or god-knows-what) are one hell of a problem and difficult to stop. We've had to change registration procedures, block ranges of IP addresses (mostly from Russia and China) to keep the spambots in check. A few still get through, as they do here.

Always some hacker out there with plenty of time on their hands trying to build a better mousetrap (spambot).

A person that eats a lot of SPAM...

This is one kind of SPAM,
The other is what they said above

According to the The Amazing SPAM Home Page, the ingredients of SPAM are as follows:
  • chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added
  • salt (for binding, flavor, and firmness)
  • water (to help in mixing)
  • sugar (for flavor)
  • sodium Nitrite (for color and as a preservative)
And here are some other interesting SPAM-related facts to consider:
  • In the United States, 3.8 cans of SPAM are consumed every second.
  • Hawaiians eat an average of four cans of SPAM per person per year (this is the highest SPAM consumption rate per capita in the world).
  • Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia eats a SPAM and mayonnaise sandwich three times a week.
  • Nikita Krushchev credited SPAM with the survival of the WWII Russian army. Quothe the Krushchev: "Without SPAM, we wouldn't have been able to feed our army."

It's the emails you get trying to sell you Viagra or Trojans. Viagra does nothing and I haven't had a need for Trojans in 30 years! Why, oh why, do they torture me ...

That would be a "Troll."

A lot of the SPAM here is a quick hit and run where the scum leaves a short line with an link, on a very old thread. The membership generally catches it quick and alerts the Mods so you might just open up a thread and see a handful of posts that say... 'Spammer!' But you are no longer able to see the garbage that set them off.

Gotcha. Basically an A-hole or an A-hole's computer either stirring crap up or selling something. Thanks for that.
