Default Greenhorns on Deadliess Catch

I am always surprised how the Greenhorns are so clueless as to what world they chose to step into once they cross the rail and the boat leaves port.

The show has been on for some time now and the internet and Google has been around even longer.

Would you go into something (hell) that could easily kill you with no turning back without a least checking into it a little?

Chris on the Wizard with Capt. Keith.

Its a everyday event for greenhorns and seasoned fishermebn alike. Nobody would go if you thought about it.

Honestly, I'm 51 and in fabulous shape, have a lot of experience sport fishing and would love to do one trip on the Northwestern or the Time Bandit. Not for the money but just for the thrill of it. My lovely bride of 27 years thinks I could do it too. I couldn't work under Keith though. No way, no how. Guy just rubs me the wrong way and obviously a lot of other people (crew) too..

Maybe they actually want some of the clueless greenhorns.

It is a TV show.....

As a captain on a crab boat that knows the dangers of the Bering Sea for seasoned crab fisherman why would you take someone that has never even been on a boat on the Bering Sea in the first place. I find it totally irresponsible to put ANYONE in that situation that is not prepared for it and then get bitchy when they can't perform the job. The captain is responsible for the safety of HIS crew not the other way around.

after watching the show for as long as its been on, no way I'd even consider trying it after seeing what they all go through.. I doubt I'd even be able to stand up in the boat, much less work in some of the weather/waves they go through....

90% of what we get to see is Discovery's fancy schmancy editing but that being said... someone needs to beat the captain of the Wizard's ass.

I remember when one of the Hilstrands wanted to and I can see why. Nothing exemplifies a small penis on a big boat like that guy.

Jon Hillstrand had an altercation with Coburn once. Coburn ended up on his ass in a mud puddle. The guy is a prick, if he worked on tugs he would be in real trouble.

And knock his teeth down his throat at the same time. Greenhorn or not, he has no right talking down to his crew as he does. He's a hothead.

All of the seasoned workers on those boats were greenhorns at some point in their lives. Must have been real irresponsible Captains that gave them their start in the business.

I think it was stupid of Keith to take a kid out without knowing whether he gets sea sick of not. The TV didn't show it but I bet that's what happened to the kid, he puked until he went down.

Did the one greenhorn get paid at all?

The captain said he'll get $10K if he sticks it out. Then he didnt help unload the crab and got in a taxi to the airport.

Hate to glass-half empty this one, but Deadliest Catch is a redneck soap opera.
90% of this stuff is made up to keep folks interested, for some reason after a long day at work, folks need more drama in their lives. Sure the job is tough, but their blowups are staged to keep the audience awake. At least nobody is sleeping with each other.

I do believe Capt. Keith keeps more greenhorns so keep is employee costs down. They do not get a full share which makes more money for everyone else. As to the greenhorn walking off and what Keith said over is loud speaker. Pure class Keith. No amount of money is worth what he did to that kid.

Agreed, Kieth can be an ass hole. But that greenhorn was a little puss. He clearly wasn't having a hard time physically doing the job. He just didn't like the job and being told what to do.

The boat came in and before the offload began he is all clean shaven and dressed in his travel clothes and packed. For him to not stay around for a few more hours to help with the offload is pretty shitty.

I can see if he was physically beat and sore, but he looked fine. And the off load is the easiest job of the entire trip.

He deserved to eat some shit. And he certainly didn't deserve a full greenhorn share. I hope they docked him for all the time he was standing around doing nothing and certainly dock him for not helping with the offload.

Yes all that is true. But would you stand being yelled at like that? I think that was my point. You get more with sugar than vinegar. I guess I thought the kid was getting back the only way he thought he could. I guess it was a case of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I do agree with you, no I wouldn't stand around getting talked to like that. But the kid knew he had a job to do and chose not to. All he had to do was listen to what the deckhands told him to do. If he would have tried his best he wouldn't have been talked to like that. Kieth while he can be a jerk he does seem to be pretty good at knowing when someone is actually trying.

But when he sees someone that is just along for the ride he loses it. This kid was along for the ride. Like someone mentioned before. There is no way this kid didn't know what he was getting into. I'm sure he has seen the show and seen Capt Kieth yell at his crew.

He put himself in that position. He knew what he was getting into and in this case the greenhorn got what he deserved.

Yes I don't think I would have ever put myself in that position. In fact I would never would or could have worked on one of those vessels. Even in my 20's I needed more sleep than those guys ever got. LOL.

you guys need to read Tucker Max's book where he actually meets Capt Keith and then fishes with the Hilstrands on the Time Bandit. Max says Capt Keith has homosexual tendencys in the book. Quite a good read.

No doubt about it, I wouldn't last a day on one of those boats much less a month or two.
